rhino 3d maximum workable file size

#1

Hi This is my first post here, I hope I have found the right place to post.
If not please excuse my noobish error.

I will address this question to people who are professional users of the rhino platform.
My issue is as follows.

What is the largest file size that one can work with using rhino?
I mostly model jewellery items for 3d print and don’t often have problems with file size
however I have been asked to prepare for 3d print several items designed by Weta the 3d design team who are well known for there work with the “lord of the rings” films produced by Peter jackson.
Im not quite sure what app they used to build them with as they where sent to me as stl files, the actual pieces are jewellery items and are quite small but the file size is big…
128 meg.

most of my current work is under 30 to 40 megs and as such I havent had any file size problems before.

rhino wont open a file this big it just crashes my pc.
However I can open it in the slicing program for the 3d printer so im sure its not a corrupt file.
Im running a quad core 3000 with for gigs of quite fast ram.

any help with this would be really helpfull.

I have in the past opend files up to 60-70 megs in rhino that where first modeled in z-brush and they did take a long time to load, from past experiance I try to keep my z-brush models under 2000000 polygons and that has worked well for 3d print but this last file has me stumped for ideas.

That file size is fine. It might be your render mesh setting are too high so it can’t cope.

and also what are the largest files you have worked with in rhino and still been able to work.
cheers.

OK. Menu path : Render > Render Properities. Select Mesh. Set to Jagged & Faster.

If this is set to custom and you dont understand the settings then certain viewports can take long time to create. Make sure all viewports set to wireframe first.

I have worked with 150mb files. Im running 2gb Ram on XP quad core.
