Hola! If you’re intrested in a quick backstory of my experince with 3D modeling, meh name’s Ingulit, and I’m a Nendo/Wings 3D/Mirai vet of about two years experince. I essentially grew up using Nendo and have dabbled a tad with Mirai, but when I heard about Wings 3D, I quickly jumped aboard due to its extreame ease of use and customization capabilities over those of Nendo (the only other modeling program I had available to me at the time). I mostly got into the 3D modeling scene due to a class that some of the people who made Nendo/Mirai hosted at my school two years back, and since then I’ve been making models for use in Halo: Custom Edition and for my own personal use. I typically model things on a low-poly scale, so as to use said modeling in the video game scene. Even with my long time experince with 3D modeling programs and my somewhat decent ability to create mechanical models, I still consider myself to be somewhat a newbie when it comes to things such as character modeling (the very thing Wings/Nendo/Mirai are supposed to excel at… :X ) and being able to create models from scratch (I’m probably the least artistic 3D modeler out there, if one was to judge). Also, I have a bad habit of starting projects, but never finishing them… I’ve probably got around 200 or so models of about 20 minute’s work put into them just sitting around on my hard drive, just waiting to be finished (:P). Due my lack of experince in general 3D modeling terms and my inability to create models from scratch, I have come here in the hope of sparking my insparation in new and facinating ways and to greatly further my prowess in the 3D modeling feild. (By the way, I’m sorry if it is hard to understand some of the things I am saying due to inablility to translate my thoughts into words effectively… I’ve never been that good at making myself legible when I’m not talking in real life, so please bear with me on that X| ) If you are intrested in some of the things that I’ve made, I’ve got a photo album here of most of the models that I considered to be somewhat decent: Link
Anyways, as for the reason I came here… I recently started work on a fantasy grenade launcher for use in a Halo mod by refrencing a solitary peice of concept art that was given to me by other members of the mod team, and I’m having some trouble creating some parts of the model that are smooth or curvy, such as the handle. Since the concept art was drawn from a 2-D perspective from the side, I decided to try to “plane model” the grenade launcher as best I could in Wings 3D (I know Wings is mostly ment for box modeling, but I’ve no experince in any other program to plane model it in and I wasn’t able to box model it from the side effectively). Essentially, I took a cube, dissolved off five of the six faces, and cut/connected the edges to make a “plane” in the shape of the diffrent parts of the gun. This has gotten me pretty far, though I’m currently stuck in trying to make some cirtian parts:

This is the concept art I am creating the model off of. Notice that many of the corners are rounded… I’m having a lot of trouble figuring out a way to do this in Wings while staying within the boundries of the image (IE, the outlines… Whenever I try to make a corner rounded, I end up extruding past the outline of the image and mess it up).

This is what I have done so far… The red (highlighted/selected) parts are those which are still planar… I’m not that sure how to make the rounded parts from these peices, and this is why I came here: how should I go about making these parts?
Notice: I’m going to edit the pictures into this post once I upload them to the web, so hold on just a sec while I get them ready…
EDIT: Okay, pictures are in. I actually forgot the username to my 3D model album, so I’m going to have to make a new user and re-upload my pics of stuff I’ve done (whoopie)… Also, three things I wanted to add to this post: (1) Now, as for how I’m thinking this will go, will those whom are replying to this thread post in a style of pointing out diffrent parts of the model and go into detail of how exactly they’d model it (kinds of modeling, styles, methods, etc.), or will it be done some other way? (2) If there is a desire for me to upload what I’ve done so far so as to give people a better idea of what I’m doing, that is definitely possible… (3) Heh, I feel kinda shameless for asking this… But, if someone was willing to attempt to model this gun and record themselves doing it (and later editing in details of how you modeled it/why you did cirtian things where you did/etc.), that’d be kinda nice…
Btw, I’m not asking for someone to make the model for me… Rather, I’m asking to see how someone with more experince would model this, so that I could then go back and do it myself.
EDIT 2: Added the link for my new photo album… Note that I still need to upload a large amount of images, so if you go there, there might not be very much to look at at the time… I’m working on it.
