Requesting feedback on a character model

#1

Hey guys,
So we are currently in the process of making our graduation movie, a story that takes place on an abandoned japanese island and we are having some doubts one one of the main characters, Wen, who is supposed to be of asian/japanese descent. While the concept arts were matching what we wanted it didnt really translate in 3D, and we are lacking some serious feedback here…

We wanted this character to have a likable face (beautiful) but not too cute either, as she is supposed to have lived astray on an abandoned island… Maybe you guys would have some feedback on how we can make her look more japanese and perhaps better looking ?

We liked the appeal of that woman in the photo reference I’m attaching (without wanting our character to look like her per se) We just seem to be missing some points…

We’d greatly appreciate any feedback and critique.

-Thanks!

hey I think it feels nice overall. you can make the mouth/chin area feel more fleshy, it looks kind of like a mask - the lips feel too flat and the mouth corners are too far forward, the chin just looks like pointy bone without flesh/fat. I know you’re not aiming for it to look like the ref, and aren’t going for realism, but kind of study the way the fat and flesh is distributed in that area of the face. for instance, the curve from the bottom of the nose towards the lip is concave, but try making it convex
your eyes feel like they are bulging out from the side view. usually there is a lot more distance between the nose bridge and how far out the eyeball goes. also consider the bones of the eye socket a bit - basically i would pull the eyes back. as a random example, look at anna from frozen, it’s very stylized but you still get the feeling like the eye socket is in the face.
the eyebrows go back too far towards the ear as well, and for a default position look very close to the top lids. remember that the lids are going to have to open up wider than they are in this default pose.
the shape of the skull feels blocky and not exactly correct, if you look at reference you’ll see.
the nose is very small (not necessarily bad) but in your concept art the drawings imply a wider nose. also, I have the same note about the feeling of fleshiness in the way the nose connects to the cheeks - it feels stiff. observe how in the ref, the fatty tissue in the cheek pushes out

some of the look you’re going for also will come in the texturing though, especially in the eyes

good luck
