[request] Joe! Boxcontroller Face Rig

#1

Joe (or Maks) , will you be updating your facial rig CD with the messiah"s box controller, maybe with some of the additional ideas behind Osipa (STOP STARING) tools for squatch and stretch facial controls but applied to messiah rather than Maya.

Your explanation with expressions and such are always welcome.
It would be amazing to see your style of teaching/instructing on the box controller tool.

While I understand the concept of box controllers, they seem to be sort of the black arts
realm within messiah. I’d love an in-depth explanation of them - I was really impressed by
Marek’s box controller panel setup in his TD reel. Very clean, nicely laid out…magic! (along with alot of experimentation and late nights I’m sure  )

#3

My wallet is always open to you Joe and you too, Marek, should you decide to make time.

#4

I put a box controller tutorial in the minituts 2 cd. while it’s not armatures, it does make use of many messiah features like weight sampling, metaEffectors and blendshapes.

Dunno what osipa is.
??

Hey Joe,
Julian is referring to Jason Osipa’s book Stop Staring: Facial Modeling and Animation Done Right

Essentially Jason’s facial setup contains 40+ blendshapes using something like the Box Controllers in messiah to animate - similar to what Marek did in his Demo reel - this is in contrast to using using bones.

I have the MiniTuts2, can’t believe I mssed that but still…

Your attention of detail and price points (I’ve bought all of them) of your previous CDs
Makes me stick with messiah for my chaarcter animation needs even though i have had a boat load of maya related chores lately.

In that regard, a tut series focusing on Osipa level and depth for facial rigging but in Cosman-Messiah angle, would be heavan. Just wishful thinking.

Question: Are you still rigging the same way as your first body tuts or have altered/ improve any Techiques.

Are we going to see Joe Cosman: Broken Rig CD or Joe Cosman:Doing it the Maks Way, anytime soon.:scream:

You have my check sir!

I think I gave a quite ok description some time ago here on cgTalk. Try searching for it. Unfortunately I am not able give a demo, because my PC just died - I am writing from my Mac (which doesn’t run Messiah unfortunately).

#8

I might have something for fans of reverse engineering. Have to get in touch with Marek first, though.

#9

What ever happened to getting something for fans of reverse engineering? Did you get in touch with Marek? I would love to try to reverse engineer one of his rigs…

François

#10

It’s been said a million times…but hey! I’d have my wallet out super duper fast if Marek would do a DVD training series for Messiah - building various rigs (not just bipeds) and then setting up a really efficient animation methodology (group keyframe setting etc).

Would be soooooo coooool.

Regards Marek releasing rigs - remember, this guy is a professional and makes his money through rig design, so realeasing them for free…I don’t think so!

#11

@ Francois: still waiting for feedback

@DMack: I’m the professional that defined and tested the rigs’ capabillities, as well as paid for them. I could arguably release them on my own.

edit: I also know that Marek has since developed his rigs further. These would no longer be state-of-the-art, just fantastic as always. Marek wrote a script for the spine (isner, avoids flipping) and that’s something I wouldn’t give out without his okay.

#12

Oooh … David. Release them! Free them!

#13

David - Ha! I didn’t realise! yeah - throw them to the begging masses! What were the rigs developed for?

On a side note…you, a ‘professional’ - Nah, you’re far too crazy! :scream: Or is that a pre-requisite for this profession?

#14

@DMack. Yeah - this whole cg production field is a bit manic. Nature of the beast.

I’ll release them in some way, maybe not complete, next week.

#15

OOOOH Looking forward to it!

#16

Yessir!! You da man

#17

i would love to play with a nice face rig for sure! whip it out!

#18

So, here’s the facial rig worked out by Marek based on the Jason Osipa layout. Very cool in messiah is the left/right effector which saves about half the necessary morphs. Also have a look at the armatures section - groovy stuff. Model and management from myself.

digest it, and give back to the community.

#19

David,

Thanks alot for the rig (will have fun reverse engineering it). I’ve been playing with the rig and notice that the box controllers don’t do anything. Am I missing something?

Have you placed the included box controller scripts in the scripts file?
You need to do so…
