'Replace' Model?

#1

Is there a way to ‘replace’ a model with another? I should have used referenced models but not all of the scenes are using them. Besides, I don’t really like how all of the models aspects are locked. It would be really nice if you could just replace one model with another, or replace the elements of one model with the matching elements (by name) of another model. I don’t want to loose the pose constraints I have set up now.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Tui.

Q: Is there a way to ‘replace’ a model with another?

How about…

  1. Use Model / Convert to Reference. This exports the model to a file and imports it back as a reference.

  2. Open a new scene and import model file created in (1) into the scene. Do no load as reference, load it locally so the geometry becomes part of the scene.

  3. Make what ever modifications you want.

  4. Export the new model to replace the orginal model file you created in (1). The referenced model will update automatically the next time the scene is reloaded or use model / update reference.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Ohmanogin for the reply. Sounds like a good solution, but it seems that I don’t have the ‘convert to reference’ option. I’m still running 5.1 for the moment. If by any chance it is a buried feature, could you point out the menu path? It isn’t listed in the help reference, nor is it listed under the Modify>Model menu.

Thanks again,

Hi,

Like I said in the ‘passes’ thread, I would recommend upgrading to 2010SP1, and if that is not possible, please state that you’re working with v.5.1.

Now you’re probably keep asking questions and getting answers for a more recent version of Softimage…
If you state that you’re working with v.5.1, it will keep the answers more leveled to your version, instead of getting answers that will not help you as they will be about newer features

cheers,

I am guessing it is not in 5.1, but the path is Model: Modify / Model / Convert to Reference.

However, I see no reason why you couldn’t export your local model to a model file. Delete your current model and import as a reference again. You could use nulls or name it something else to line it back up with the original.

Hope this helps,

Thanks again for the help.

I’ve upgraded and the ‘convert to referenced’ option worked nearly without a hitch. Most importantly, it kept all my pose constraints. This is what I was avoiding by not deleting the model in the manual option.

RESOLVED.

Thanks again.
