rendering with a backplate

#1

I’m trying to render an object using an hdri for lighting and a backplate for the background but when I render the backplate doesn’t render. I set it in the viewport background and am using vray as my renderer. Is there a setting somewhere that I can tell 3ds max/vray to use the backplate?

edit: I figured it out last night.

Viewport background is just for working in max, doesn’t affect renders.

If you are doing HDRI lighting, you should be using a dome light in which case it should show up in the render unless you have it set to invisible. If you want to hide the dome light with invisible, then you’ll put the background image in the environment slot on the rendering menu.

You may need to go to the color mapping rollout in the f10 render settings and check or uncheck “affect background” if it’s showing too dark or what have you.

Edit: Just saw your edit. Leaving the post for the next guy…
