Rendering select objects w/reflections from full scene

#1

Hey fellas, I’m trying to figure out how to get some alien plants in a space scene.

I have the plants and everything, but I need to composite some glow to them in after effects (this is too difficult in maya).

SO, how does one go about rendering out select objects WITH reflections and bounced light from the rest of the scene?

I basically want everything to be the same except I need, the plants on a separate layer in after effects so I can add the glow to them precisely; I don’t want the glow applying to the ground or other objects.

Because the plants are in my final render, I still need the necessary reflections and bounced light from the entire scene.

I searched and found an old thread talking about using batch render, and checking reflections and what not, but I can’t seem to find that in maya 2013.

Thanks!!

i can’t say i know much about maya, but in 3dsMax/Mental Ray you can add a Matte Render pass of certain selected geometries.

this will give you a b/w alpha of the items which can then be used in the final comp.

i’m sure maya must have this type of thing. i pretty sure Vray does as well.

if not you can just render out the matte pass the old school way using black and white materials.

Thanks, I know Maya has the capabilities, but I’m just trying to figure out the proper way to do it. It seems the render layer editor might be what I’m looking to learn more about.
