Rendering glitch in half res display

#1

I’m having this weird issue in AE CS4.
When viewed in full res my comp looks like this:

All appears normal, but when I switch to half res mode, I get this:

For some reason the layer blending mode is rendering as Normal instead of Multiply as it should.
The layer is definetely set to Normal blending mode and when I switch back to full res it renders as expected. It also occurs in all other down-res displays.

I have restarted AE and my computer and no luck. Also tried purging the image cache and video memory etc but had no effect… This only happened recently. I worked on this for a day or two beforehand with no issues.

Any thoughts on what’s causing this? Thanks.

Mmh, have you tried turning off OpenGL entirely?

OpenGL is off, I’m using adaptive resolution.

Very odd. Is there a specific effect applied to the tint layer or the background? Is it a solid or a shape layer? what are possibly mask feathering settings on the layer? Still feels liek an OpenGl error of some sort, so it might relate to a third-party plug-in. also: Any adjustment layers in the comp?

No effect applied to the layer causing the problem, just set to multiply blending mode.
There is an adjustment layer with colour correction/grading effects but this doesn’t seem to affect anything. Very unusual. I’m working on other projects with no issues and I’m actually finished with the one with the problem but obviously I would still like to know what is causing it. Thanks for the advice so far though.

Oh and its a footage layer

#7

you tried to make a proxy from each footage?

#8

Have you tried getting rid of the adjustment layer and seeing if that is an issue? The adjustment layer will make AE render things in order based on layer order and not 3D space. There is a Video Copilot tutorial on it, but I would check and see if it isn’t the adjustment layer causing issues. Would it be possible to post ur project files?

I tried turning the adjustment layer off and it got rid of the problem, so it’s definetley what’s causing the problem. I don’t have the project files on me at the moment but I can probably put them up on monday (they’re on computers at my uni), but I don’t know what you will find :\

And no I haven’t tried using proxies actually, I’ll give it a shot when I get a chance

I’ll see if I can explain why ur adjustment layer was causing a problem. If you are using 3D layers your adjustment layers will ignore the 3D Z space data and basically make your layers show up in the order they are in your layer window.

I believe andrew kramer explains this a little better in this tutorial. So if you have your Color correction effects on the adjustment layer, you will basically need to take those effects and place them on the actual layer. So take your curves or whatever and put it on the actual smoke footage or comp for example. OR you can take all of the footage that needs to be color corrected and precomp it. Once you kinda understand what the adjustment layer is doing to the render order it can be used very effectively as another way to cheat 3D. I actually use this technique on many projects, its a very powerful tool. Keep me posted on your issue I love AE so trying to figure out these issues is fun for me and plus its a great way to pay back all of the people that help me with Maya and C4D stuff.
