Render and high res img Tutorial?

#1

Hi everyone,
I was searching for tutorials that explains the render process for export in very nice resolution and dpi (more than 72).

I want to be able to export in some format to use it in Photoshop and then make a poster. So, i need to work with very good quality of images (more than 150dpi)

Sorry for the newbie question

Here’s a trick that I use for calculating render sizes for print resolution…

Load Photoshop and create a new image. Switch the measurements to inches and set it to the size you want to print out, 36x48in for example. Don’t forget to switch the DPI to something print quality, 200 to the naked eye looks pretty damn close to 300, and sucks up a lot less memory (Some professional illustrators use that trick, shhh)

Click ok

Once the new blank sheet pops up, Click on Image/Image Size and switch the Width/Height to Pixels, that’s the resolution that you need to render at for a poster of that size.

At least… that’s what I have always done. Hopefully someone else pops in to help =)

thats very smart!
so, changing the fields width, height, and dpi in the render panel it will be enough…
great!!

thanks!

Is there any chance that changing the size of the DPI in the render panel will not take any effect to the image saved?

I press F9 and render with DPI=1200. Later, when the render is finished, click the ‘save image’ button and save it to the hdd.
I open that file in phshp and it says Resolution 72.

I have tryed differents formats (jpg, tga…) with the same result…

its clear that im doing something worng, but what?!! ahha
thanks again 4the help!

forget about dpi for renders, you’re rendering pixels that might get printed with a certain amount of pixels per Inch on paper. So if you want to end up with 300 pixels per Inch you need to multiply the amount of Inches x 300 that’s the amount of pixels you need to render.

But on screen it really does not matter a bit how much DPI an image is.

The DPI settings in the Render Properties panel in Modo are only there so you don’t have to go into Pshop to calculate the amount of pixels you need if you want to render for print at a certain size at a certain DPI. ( and you’re using Inches and not centimeters )

Try setting the “Resolution Unit” to Inches and the DPI to 300, now change the Frame Width and Height to something like 5 Inches for both. When you switch back the Resolution Units to Pixels you’ll notice it’s changed to 1500 x 1500 pixels.

So, to render an image that will be 5 Inches wide and high when you print it at 300 DPI you need 1500 x 1500 pixels. Now when you print the same image at 150 DPI, it will be 10 Inches…etc. etc.

i was getting confused when look into the field “resolution” of the img in phshp, and it says 72dpi
