What a coincidence! I was just reading posts refuting Hockney’s claims that renaissance masters used any kind of device or lenses to create their drawing and paintings.
This was from the Art Renewal Center, one of the largest online museums and resources for artists.

I agree with everything stated by members of the Art Renewal Center. Check out some of their “modern masters” work on their site, all of it done by hand, no lenses, no mirrors, no help from the computer… if artists alive today can accomplish this level of realism without aids, why would the masters have needed them (and why was it never documented if they had)? It all comes down to hard work.
