remove display transparency and mirror (newbie)

This is a silly question, but I am a newbie and I have not found a solution.
I modeled my character, as I have seen in many tutorials, first one half, then mirror it, then combine, merge vertices, and then smooth proxy.
After doing these steps, is there a way to tweak one side and have the other side to mirror the change? I think there should be a way, but I do’nt know how to do it.

i dont know a better way but generally you’ll have to split the model in half and duplicate with instance and then without joining the two halves model away. When youre done you then combine the two halves and merge the vertices.

Maybe there’s a plug in for this knocking around somewhere try highend3d.
