reference model pain

#1

Hi there,
I have been using reference models in this project I’m working on and I’m noticing some really weird things going on. Sometimes materials don’t update and things like custom parameters disappear. I’m pretty much having to replace the whole model every time i make a change.
Are they flakey?

They are solid if you setup correctly.
For example, if you don’t make some properties local (like Geometry approximation) before exporting the model, then it’s gonna inherit the one from the scene. So that could give you some headache.
Are you on 7.5? I guess there’s an option to bake properties in the refmodel before exporting… but not sure.

You need to take a look on other things like how do you organized your model, what your delta is allowed to store… etc.
About materials, you need to understand that refmodels can have materials from the scene assigned to them, but you shouldn’t apply refmodel materials in scene object…

How is your refmodel setup being done now? A little specifics about what’s going on will help to get help.

Some of your material woes might even be related to the fact that if you don’t rename a material in XSI, and then import a model or object into a new scene, the imported model’s material will then get replaced by an material in your current scene by the same name. At least that has been my experience so far.

i haven’t experience any problems with reference models, i just work on the basic rig,
export the model, and send it to the animator,
he load it as reference, as i keep working on more advance setting of the rig, like changing controllers, or settting constrains, etc…

the only problem i have now, is one project we move it from a different computer and now my model say offloaded, i need to tell xsi were is the model now, but i am not sure how to set that up, (i am working in another project right now)

Thanks guys, the models seem to be working a little better now. I’m still finding some of my proxy parameters disappear. I have a custom parameter set that i added some shape animation proxy parameters to (By draging them from the shape editor) and for some reason they don’t show up?

[size=2]Well my Reference models have become a bit more stable but I still have this issue that when I first load a scene my reference models morph targets aren’t in their property sets and I have to offload and reload the model to get them to appear. It’s pretty hacky, and I get this error -

Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

#7

I stopped using it. Nightmare scenarios that are too painful to describe.
