Red Corner Rug, Austin Cheney (2D)

#1

Title: Red Corner Rug
Name: Austin Cheney
Country: United States
Software: Photoshop

I originally created this as a texture map to be used as a rug for a future 3d room. Textures such as these are about complicated details to make the total image more complex. I am only a mere 2d artist, so I wanted to see what I could do with a design that would look good when possibly set to a perspective.
I created this entirely in Photoshop tracing selection edges in many different layers. Nothing complicated. I would like some critiques on the design, but more importantly I would like to know how such an image can be used to enhance a 3D scene as a texture. This is mainly a 3D and concept forum, so I am hoping I can critiques or suggestions about the use of an object such as this in 3D project.
I created this originally at 2000x3000px. I also choose to put 7 color variations together into a large print image as a cheap mother’s day gift. I have supplied a link to the image at half its native resolution.

really nice!

This is very good, well done.

I’m sure it will work well as a texture, as long as you create some appropriate surface properties and do a nice bump map.

Amazing job…definitely will put it in my texture library…do You mind seeing this rug in my 3d scene?

#5

fantastic details!
how long did you work on it ?

Wow. That’s a LOT of detail.

How well it will work as a texture map depends on where it is used, and how the image will be rendered. Bear in mind that in a 3D scene, particularly if applied to a floor plane, the image will be seen in perspective - quite possibly extreme perspective - which will squeeze out a great deal of the detail you’ve put into the image. Very fine, high contrast lines like this can also cause problems when interpolated, giving you unexpected results. Unless you knew that the rug would be a focal point in the scene, or that the resolution of the rendered image would be huge, you probably wouldn’t need such fine detailing in a colour map.

An impressive achievement nonetheless!

incredible amount of detail! I’m sure it will look great in a 3D scene.

Thanks so much for the kind praise on my image. I forgot to post this originally, but here is the 3D image that originally inspired me to create this:

I suppose the only way to truely see how this would work in a 3D scene is for me to get off my butt and start learning 3D. If anybody would like to use this in a project all I ask is to be credited where your image is published and to be notified every time it is used in a new project. Thanks so much!
