Recreating the Rhino 4 splash screen scene

#1

hi there,

maybe you think it’s a silly thing, but currently I’m trying to recreate the render/light setup of the Rhino 4 splash screen (or Help > About Rhino screen if you want). I have a project with similar, porcelain-like objects and I like very much this kinda studio lighting and the depth of Rhino Logo scene, so I try to learn something from a properly set render for later use.

so I’ve been playing with the lights and partly have some success, but something’s missing I see that, but can’t figure what.

I post two images, one from the original render and one of my tryings.

original:

and this is mine:

as you can see the two setup is similar, but not the same. I think I’m very close, but somehow the details are missing from my render (like at the nose area of the rhinoceros). and I miss that depth and contrast that the original render has.

I’ve played a lot with the lighting, but the closest setup is this so far:

  • a self illuminating circle plane above the rhino to make the “light source reflection”
  • a rectangle light above the rhino
  • a fill light (point light) in front of the camera, to soften the shadows
  • I rendered in Flamingo Raytrace, with ground plane enabled
  • the material is a simple white with a little reflection + self illumination

so my questions are:
do you think the original image was rendered in Flamingo Raytrace? or it is Photometric? or a completely different software?

did I set the lights correctly? I mean, should I use different light types or is it ok for a scene like this (rect light, point light)?

how can I get those little details the original image has?

what settings and light/material/render setup do you suggest?

thanks in advance, every help and suggestion would be appreciated!

thank you for the answers!

maybe the question was stupid, but don’t tell me there’s nobody here who actually does something in Rhino. and could answer at least some of my question or just give me some advice.

but maybe that’s the case…

The rhino base here is not very crowded…

One thing that for sure is wrong is a point light in front of a camera. This acts like a flash in photography. No studio setup is ever done with a flash. move the point light 30-45 degree from your camera.
Overall I think your pic looks good, but a bit over exposed. so lower the fill light (your moved point light) maybe also the main light (on top) has to be lowered in intensity

Thank you for your advices and sorry to answer you so this late. Yes, this base isn’t so crowded, I already almost forget to come here and check.

I will try your suggestions. I feel too the image is overexposed a bit. And the flash light thing you’re absolutely right, although that’s the nice thing in CGI that you can put anything anywhere, lights, cameras etc. and adjust their settings in a way you couldn’t do in real life. So cheats are accepted – if not welcomed – here

Thank you again.
