Recreating cool growth effect

Hi there,

Since I still couldn´t convince my boss to buy frost, I´m trying to recreate a cool video I saw on vimeo with just Pflow and Vray:

I´m trying to use VrayMetaBalls and so far it looks promising, I just wanted to knwo if maybe some of you guys already did something similar and could share your experience…

Basically I would emit Fume along a spline. Then birth PFlow or TP particles, split out a percentage of particles for the colored balls, and mesh the core with Frost (or any other meta mesher).
