Rebecca Kimmel's Anatomy Review 003: SHADING TUTORIAL AND HUMAN SKULL EXERCISE

#101

First of all I would like to thank Rebecca for this great thread! Anyway here is my third and best attempt at trying to draw and shade the skull (2B pencil and paper, scanned in) - thanks to everybody for motivating me to pick up my pencil  Fantastic work from all!
I’ll attempt to do a digital one later based off Rebecca’s tutorial

#102

Worked great default, thanks again. I am going to use my own web space to hotlink from, but the code from image shack worked like a charm!

evryone have a good day.

Amazing tutorials Rebecca! Will really come in hand for my Drawing Unit.

Thanks!!

#104

No worries Shaun -

I think your work is GREAT and by giving you the link to image shack I hope that you will post more of it!

in defense of the apples…

just kidding

hey guys, terrific work you all, there are some amazing skulls out there! It’s fantastic to see how different artists approach a similar subject

#106

thank you for these lessons and the energy u put in rebecca

i made a qick pencil sketch and colored it in ps

#107

you’re too kind default. I have been drawing tons as of late, it is of course all rebecca’s fault. My favorite thing to to do (right now) is grab an 11x17 piece of paper (standard printer paper) and draw rows of skulls using line (not much shading or any at all). They are small, only about 3x3 inches, but they allow me to draw a whole bunch. While everybody else is working on one or two good pieces (and I am guilty of this too) I have allready drawn the skull multiple multiple times. Ill post some of these tonight. By the time I get around to creating a larger more complex piece, I have allready worked out a majority of the problems and mistakes many individuals will commonly make. I still make tons of mistakes, but imagine what my drawings might look like If I did not do the preliminary drawings first (just plain bad). Draw lots of small drawings and learn big!!

oooh, and who the heck knew skulls would be so difficult to draw! Arrghhh, there were times I would rather have had my fingernails pulled out, I can not begin to describe how frustrated I was.

Will follow your advice Shaun - that sounds like a really good idea (drawing many on a sheet)

Great to see you back, stipick! I am thrilled you will be taking a figure drawing course ~ feel free to post away your sure to be Awesome results in this forum! I like the direction you’re headed with your piece ~ kudos for trying the traditional medium! Each medium has its advantages / disadvantages, and I am happy to see you guys trying different ones!

Let me know more about what you want to know about the guidelines, and I’ll be happy to provide info.

EDIT: Great advice, Shaun / stipick_S! I think I see now what you mean about guidelines. I am happy so long as folks are drawing skulls and shading them in whatever medium they choose. The more skulls, the better! You need not stick to a specific format ~ eg, only one skull at a time. If you’ve got a page of them, great! But remember to emphasize SHADING, not just drawing, in these studies. Ouch, don’t pull those fingernails out! That would seriously impede your drawing abilities!

default.rol,

Yep, everyone is doing a great job!

commodore,

I don’t think this is ā€˜bad’ at all! Thank you for posting your work!

kaylon,

Sweet! I think it’s awesome that people are getting a chance to stretch their wings into new territory ~ kudos for trying new things!

Matariki,

That’s awesome, as with kaylon, I’m thrilled that people from all different backgrounds are posting their work! It’s so cool that people are doing this! ~ I hope you continue to post more!

SunnyRaining,

REALLY Nice Work! I love how much attention you paid to the interior of the eye sockets, and the background shading is really nice ~ I love the consistency of your strokes! Good work, keep it up!!

enialadam,

Great! I am happy to hear this is useful. I am hoping that when school starts up again in the Fall, people will post their classwork here in this forum ~ it’s awesome to see everyone’s progress!

Zarracin,

Ok, THAT is funny! As I was telling someone else, I just KNEW that if I didn’t emphasize the NO APPLES thing, I would wake up in the morning with tons of beautifully rendered apples in the thread ~ Guess I overdid it, lol!

Vahn,

This is really cool! Thank you for posting your work! I’m a big stinkin’ fan of the WIP and Daily Sketch forums, and I know you contribute a lot to those, so I am just happy as a lark to see you here! I really like that you used a monochromatic scheme that isn’t straight black, white, gray ~ often these desaturated hues can be really nice, and bring mood into a static piece ~ good work! Keep on posting!

You guys are the best, thank you for taking the time to do these! Look forward to seeing more of everyone’s work! And I’m thrilled to see you guys pitching in to help one another out ~ as with the other lessons, remember that critiques and draw-overs are not limited to me ~ anyone may do so so long as it is okay by the artist reviewed, and the reviewer is polite and offers constructive criticism.

Here’s my submission Rebek, 1 hour ball point pen and prismacolor pencil. Damn printer couldn’t pick up on the subtle shades I gave =(

#111

Rebecca- on your digital sketch of the skull, you used several guidlines to set up what appears to be porportions and symetry/asymetry and what ever else (I dont know). I am curious as to what each line represents and your process for placing those lines and how the basic line work for the skull is developed from those lines? does that make sense?

magic man- nice! very very nice! would love to see the original version.\

there seems to be some very very nice work being done in ball point pen. I think I am going to have to try it. Will any pen do?

#112

magic man,

Crowd OOOOooohs, AAAahhhhs…

GREAT work, m m! This is excellentlessness with a pencil! Sorry to hear your scanner failed you (do they EVER not fail us?) but from what I can see, you did a not-so-shabby job! :scream:

No, I am thrilled to see your work here, so thanks for posting this! K, gotta go back into mine now to spare myself embarrassment.

The top of the skull is beautiful, nothing like nailing a gesturally descriptive line in one clean go ~ Rockin’!

stipick_S,

Gotcha, give me a bit and I’ll write up a step by step thingy…I’ll just omit the steps where I go ā€˜dang! ~that ain’t right’ and just put in the steps where it looks like I know what I’m doing.

Thanks for the interest!

~Rebeccak

EDIT: I LOVE drawing anatomy studies with Ballpoint Pen. Any variety will do ~ I used to use those long ā€œIllustratorā€ pens, but I can’t seem to find them in art stores anymore ~ but really, just a good old bic or just something with a relatively fine point will do ~ I just grab whatever is available, I’ll buy a box of bics at Staples and just hoard them for a rainy day.

But definitely try different media if you get the chance, because they all work differently and teach you different things!

#113

I used a 30 cent Bic pen, my style was polished during many a boring computer science lecture oh so many years ago.

#114

Ok, per the request of stipick_S (thank you for asking), here is a more detailed explanation of how I went about digitally painting the skull (bear in mind, it isn’t finished ;)):

This is my first EVER post on cgtalk. A big thanks to defaultrol for showing me the way. Im lovin everyones work- heres my effort. Done in photoshop in about 2.5 hours, let me know what you think> enjoy.

#117

I would’ve posted it yesterday, but I couldn’t get to my scanner. I followed your suggestion about tracing, then drawing again. All I can say is wow, I think I really improved, and I reread the tutorial a couple times and tried the techniques.

#118

Andyonahill,

Awesome! At first glance, I thought my piece had magically been finished! Great work, I am thrilled to see your post! I hope you will be posting more of your work, either here, or in the main Anatomy forum. And thanks to Mike / default.rol for bringing you to CGTalk!

Mavrick71,

DEFINITE improvement! I am so glad that you actually tried this, I think it’s great that you’re putting in the effort. Hope to see more of your work!

~Rebeccak

PS, if anyone has saved nebezial’s tutorial images to their HDs, can you please let me know?
We’re trying to get his tutorial back online.

Thanks!

Hi
I lurk around for a while so I thought I could step out of shadows and post something  Hmmm so here is my skull … I mean not really mine but … never mind. Its pencil and paper. It took me a while to draw. I have never really tried to draw so detailed skull so it was good exercise for me. I have really learnt quite a few new things. Thanks for these lessons it keeps me motivated to practise and I need a lot of practise.

Here is also hirez version but i think that the picture in my post is big enough
