Rebecca Kimmel's Anatomy Review 003: SHADING TUTORIAL AND HUMAN SKULL EXERCISE

#81

My first real painting in Corel Painter! - reference from a google search that turned up a company that sells replicas… heres the link

http://www.soyoungtrading.com/img/pro9/pro45-1.jpg

Took me a while (mostly trying to work out how all the tools work.)

#82

kitami: hi. I really like your rendition of the skull. it’s clean and to the point. just a question, how long did it take you to draw it ? is it a traditional drawing or a digital one (if digital what program/brush did u use ?)

#83

Thanks for your intrest! Hmm, id say… two hours? Not quite sure cause I took a break in the middle of it. I drew it with pencil then scanned it in.

default.rol / Mike,

Cool! I commend you for trying a new program, that’s awesome! Hope you are finding the program to be a fun one. Looks like you took to the tools pretty quickly!

One thing I would recommend ~ save the version that you have, then try and do a black / white / midtone gray version ~ you will be AMAZED at the range of values you can achieve with just those three values!

Great to see you posting so much work!

kaylon,

Thank you for posting this image! You know, there is something oddly beautiful about this little piece, and I like that you’ve taken a few liberties with the proportions and shading. What other kinds of work do you do? It would be interesting to know.

Thank you for posting this piece!

Ok i didnt like this drawing i made, it looks like it grinning and me saying “haha look at how you made me” really does, im paranoid. But im uploading cause i had a good start at it! And i did say i would make it… so. remember me for my first skull!

ps: Rebecca your threads help soo much!

#88

Kitami,

Thank you! I’m really happy the threads are useful! ~I’m learning a lot from everyone here, too

hah this is the same exercise I had to do in painting class last week.

Minus the scull pluss a stilllife but yeah same principle.

#90

Think of it as positive reinforcement

Worked a bit on my own skull tonight…that sounds rather morbid

It’s not finished, but here is the progression so far…

#92

sequence continued…

I actually like the second to the last best…I tend to like things with a slightly ‘unfinished’ look, a la Francis Bacon…mmm…bacon…

Probably my favorite living painter is Alex Kanevsky ~ his paintings rock my world…then there’s good old Odd Nerdrum. Yep, I like the wierd ones. But their painting style is sublime.

Hope this is useful

Hey guys,

I have been away for awhile but now I am back and practicing harder than ever. It is great to have the ol’ flames a burning again. My fiance has begun the process of signing me up for a open figure studio at a local art studio (late fathers day gift)… CANT FREAKIN WAIT!!! I am having a ball… This is fantastic! I have a bunch more I would like to post, but I am tired of using attachments and running out of space quickly. I know this has been beat more than a dead horse, but if someone could point me towards any posts on how to post an image I would be gratefull.

Anyhow, the drawing! Finally passed the 15 minute mark. Had to force myself to do it, but it was fun. Thsi piece took about 2 hours and is pencil and white charcoal on toned paper.

Rebecca, I would appreciate it very much if you could elaborate on the guildlines you set up…loving the forums more and more everyday.

Shaun

p.s. I think I might have to become a society member. Just to let everybody know, It was the quality of these forums that convinced me it is well worth the money.

p.s. p.s. rebecca i’ll get that new and improved torso back up in the other thread…real soon.

I’m going to have to try that greyscale one now you mentioned it, (and seeing how you have done yours so far.)

Will try to do one soon

stipick_s - that picture is cool, is it conte crayon on canvas?

EDIT: To post an image, go to http://imageshack.us/ (bookmark this as you will use it a lot!) and follow the instructions on screen. Hope that helps some!

Later - and I’m loving the work from all so far!

#95

I said i’ll do better but this is even worse than the last one!

#96

Rebeccak thanks for your comments :).

And to answer your question, I’m an Environmental artist in the games industry, have been for 10+ years now. I dont get chances often to work on “human” or character based stuff as most of my time is spent modelling and texturing buildings and props etc, so it’s nice to find time to do the odd skull

excellent tuts

I am a technologist  I only do 3d box modeling of non-organics. Never tried organic models let alone to draw one but this tut inspired me. I can’t believe that I actually submit my drawing. There are definitely some problems, particularly the proportions are out of wack but I’ll improve on that I guess. It was been lots of fun. Thanks.

Rebecca, I think you have mistaken my work for someone elses. My first skull was done in Photoshop, not painter, so maybe you were thinking of someone elses. But I have used painter for the other threads…

Anyway, nice skull picture! Same to everyone else  This is really fun

Here’s my new skull too: Scaled down ofcourse. Done in HB pencil, scanned in, then painted in PS using the same brush as last time. (mostly)

I know the proportions are a bit off - saw this as i finished it :stuck_out_tongue:
I used the side reference Rebecca provided.

defualt- Thanks for the help… I appreciate it. The picture is just pencil and white chalk on toned paper.
