jmBoekestein,

Awesome! I really hope you do a tutorial, I think everyone here has a LOT to contribute, so don't be shy! And yep, in the old old school, artists were never allowed near live models until they had mastered black / white tonal drawings from plaster casts. They weren't old masters for nothing ~ they trained a lot HARDER and BETTER than we do these days. Their training + their talent produced their great works.

Sigh I often wish that that were still the case! I, for one, would be a better artist for it. But training like that is rare these days and expensive.

Also, working this way in Photoshop roughly approximates the way some old masters worked up their paintings: from a black / white tonal underpainting, with successive layers of thinned down color washes on top. We're just lucky in the digital age to have that fabulous shortcut known as Ctrl + Z, aka Undo. :)

But please post your tuts! :)

Slux,

Looking forward to seeing the results!

Well I’m glad you’re here to tell us these things.

Nowadays with all the reference material present on the web, there’s more than enough opportunities to study all asspects, or at least most from your little pc. I wouldn’t be able to otherwise.

It’s an option if you have discipline and internet…:), for instance downloading photographs of old statues and reference material. It’s still the basic lighting that we’re trying to learn at first I guess. With both art theories and this forum we’ll be doing quite fine I bet.

#304

slightly off-topic,hey is that u in ur avatar rebecca??

 • tries to get back onto topic* - uhm rebecca…u have a nice skull structure in that photo…

#305

Lol I was wondering also.

#306

I bet it’s the maid scrubbing the floor on wednesdays.

#307

I just thought “she” was a dismembered male torso myself… got to learn to take people at face value I was always told. :scream:

#308

people CAN change , u know…

.

#309

Don’t tell that to the ones that don’t want to! :0

They’ll run you down and hit you with sticks… :argh:

jmBoekestein,

You’re actually probably right ~ considering that the great Masters couldn’t exactly “Google” Reference photos (what was a “photo” to them?), nor handily have access to their favorite works by other great masters in .25 seconds, we basically have no excuses :). But actually I am amazed at the speed with which people (as I’ve seen on this site) can digitally draw and paint these days. Back in the day when I had to walk to school in the snow, I didn’t do a lot of digital work, and so have gradually learned digital painting on my own (my first digital painting was 2002) ~ but having said that, all of the TRADITIONAL painting experience I had had made the transition a lot more smooth. It is true what people say that the best way to learn how to paint DIGITALLY is to learn how to Draw and Paint TRADITIONALLY.

 NOOB!,

Nope, that's my mom, I'm a five-year old wunderkind. :) I hope I spelled "wunderkind" right, because I just learned that word today. :scream:

Yep, I was thinking of including the text "SURPRISE!" but thought the better of it. :surprised

 Desp#2/Rog,

Nope, that's my mom, I'm a five-year old wunderkind. :) I hope I spelled "wunderkind" right, because I just learned that word today. Oh, did I say that already? :scream:

 Squibbit,

Back when I was in daycare (you know, last year) all the kids used to make fun of me, and called me "Rebecca the headless torso". This really irked me, and I would have gotten mad and cried, but for the fact that I didn't have eyes. Luckily, thanks to Dr. Sebastian Quist, or, as he's known in the medical field, "Dr. New Missing Body Part Guy", I received a new head just today! (Unfortunately, the transplant head was blinking when it got transferred, so I still can't see squat). But, no complaints here!

*Yeesh, that was morbid! Is it Halloween?* :curious:

Ok, kids! Back to the skulls! It's almost past my bedtime, 8 pm. :)

EDIT:

Ok, now I’m just messing with people. Thanks to Squibbit for totally ruining my childhood!

Lol, I concur  I have just had WAY too much fun today. We artists certainly do have personality, ay? :scream: The Squibb really takes the cake, tho…I noticed the Squibbit vs. Squbbit challenge concluded. A moment of silence please for Squibbit.

Hi,
so here is my try
nothing great, but better then nothing

I have used reference images from the book Anatomy for the Artist (page 50-51).

However these reference images were quite small and imo not so good lit but I decided to draw that as it was so maybe these drawings can appear flat. But it´s the way they were photographed.

 side wiev will be soon
 crits are welcome

 thanks
 have a nice day

#318

Thank goodness! I was beginning to wonder how we’d alert the medical authorities…'course, by this time, it would prolly be too late…but glad to hear both Squibbit’s are alive and in good spirits! :applause:

Is there another challenge in the works? P-P-Pleease?

Hi Rebecca,

thanks for the reply. You are kind but I think these ain´t so good. To tell the truth I did these for my training - to get back to drawing after break that lasted several months (because of leaving examination  )
I have been attending drawing course for couple of months and I like drawing but I´m just a beginner. I would like to learn clay sculpting as well as CG and concept design soon. This forum of yours is really great, I´m looking forward to next excercises

best regards
