realistic hedges

#1

Alas, here is the problem. I would like to make some realistic hedges. So hence, no making a simple rectangle and slaping on a simple texture. I also have a problem in that I dont want it to eat up TOO MUCH resources either.

A while ago I experimented with using partialy transparent planes stacked with each other but this didnt turn out to good. In some instances it looked great, but in other instances it looked exactly what it was (stacked planes).

I know some games try to cut little alpha holes between the leaves and stack irregularly a few planes, I may have to resort to this though, I still want something better.

Any ideas?

How about a beveled cube with tileable texture on it, with a single leaf alpha texture on a quad that you place willy-nilly about the thing???

Yeah. Also don’t forget about the profile… a small repeating leafy-clipmap-edge goes a long way.
