ok, due to all the rules and the grey areas etc…that and my only just getting back into 3D… I’ll opt for a somewhat…maybe…maybe not easier task…

Think back to the movie… The Never Ending Story…

Remember the Giant Turtle?? I mean GIANT…

well… I’m gonna go for something along those lines… But it will be Huge… Like Rocks and Trees and stuff growing on it…these fellas are Ancient…land based and sea based…

You could walk over one and never know it… unless it wanted you to know…

I’d post the two scribbles I’ve done so far…but No scanner at home right now.

Woh great idea, i wish i’d have thought of that. 2 questions though.

1:aside from there size are there goning to be any other difference from a normal Turtle?

2: when they are in the water to they stay close to the surface (ie big moving island) or do they submerge, cu i there are allot of trees growing on the back the 1 of 2 things will prolly happen. either the trees will slow down swimming allot or the forces of traveling through the water woul rip the trees right of the back

again great idea

I was thinking water to begin with but then I thought like you…

though an Island looking one would be nice…it’d just be too hard to swim etc…

so I’ve gone more with a Giant Galapagos Island type…

http://photojo.com/galleries/SharedPhotoPage.asp?photo_id=119217&page=1

but again… when I say Giant…I mean “Never Ending Story Giant…and bigger”

my first drawing has it’s shell…well…not a visable shell…but rather just land, rock and shrubs/trees etc…even had a few trees on its head…

Though Slow…they actualy cover great distances in time due to their size…their Stride…

I guess they’d be another Ancient type race… due to their extreme age and their allmost hybernation type state…like the Ents… and time too is slower for them like elves…they live forever…

they eat grassy foods, but also take in nutrients through the vegitation that grows on them…most can live fine simply from that which they carry…no need to mow down a forest etc… this too allows them to lay dorment for very very long periods of time…

nice idea… looking forward to seeing this happen … for a moment i thought you were going to go with the old idea of the world on the back of the turtle… of course modelling the whole of middle earth might have been a pain, but this idea you’ve got is great, sketches please!

#6

well… it’s not perfect… and since I dont have a scanner to upload drawings yet… here is a little something I made in Photoshop a few mins ago, just to give a sort of idea…

#7

That’s COOL!
Another entry that reminds me of the Neverending Story

The name of that creature was Morla
If you want some pics of it, let me know - I have the DVD! I already grabbed loads of screenshots for another challenger, and I’m happy to get some pics for you if you need them

This is an awesome idea, and it definitely suits Middle Earth very well!!! Good luck :D:D

This is such a cool idea, bugger wish I’d thought of it.

can’t wait to see you start modeling this bad boy…sounds like a cool concept…i’m sure you’ll do a great job bringing this guy to life…

thanks for the replys gang… I’m all antsy to get home and work on it…but my Semester started today…so I gotta wait about 5 more hours…

But… I might toss some ???s out at you all

I’d like to make his back (top of his shell) Rocky… I’m thinking a few different things…

  1. realy make that back Geometry Super Nasty Thick…and make a Dissplacement map in photoshop …use that to make a rocky look…also thought it might make texturing it easier…

  2. Use some type os Scatter Plugin/Script to randomly toss some geometry (like if I made some different Rock shapes) out across the shell faces… but, I’m not sure if a Particle system would be good for this…or if theres a good Script that gives some good tewaking options to scattering something…

  3. maybe use a Combo of the two…

But I’m open to any and all ideas…the Photoshop image I loaded up is a tad more grassy etc than I will prolly make him…bur again… I got great Ideas…just a matter of figuring out how to do them… I’m sorta learning maya as I go…

well…it’s not much…between class starting yesterday…and it being cough cough Stargate Monday…I didnt get a lot done …

I coughed this up thismorning…I’m going back and forth between Nurbs and Polys…wrestling with finding the better way for me to do this…

this pic is just some smoothed polys…maybe tonight after work I can post something better.

#17

ok, my sad stubling in PaintFX …just seeing what it can do…wondering if it might not be a bad way to go for the top of the shell and other areas… and boy…does it move slow after a while… lol

#18

whoohooo… nice PaintFXing man,

keep up the good work

#19

thanks Levin…

I’m just toying around with ideas for landscaping the shell…parts of his head and legs too…

I’ve got so many great Ideas…just having trouble coming up with the best way to do them all.

Man what a cool concept, I love the whole hugeness of the thing.
It could be like a portable hobitton.
