Races of Middle Earth - character - LY

Okay, you guys got me this time  I always wanted to enter a challenge but time has never been on my side. It’s not there this time either, but the theme is something I just cannot miss
So I have to start with an apology that I might not be able to get into full speed until the begining of February, but I really want to finish this one.

The first idea I had upon reading the title was a troll, but as it’s forbidden, I’m going to try something different. The Olog-Hai sounds nice, I’ll try to do some sketches this weekend… I also plan to do a final render in the Alan Lee / John Howe style if I have the time.

This feels sooo great… made me grab a pencil and start to sketch after such a long time

I’ve read up about the Olog-Hai in the appendices. Tolkien spent only a few words on them; namely, that Sauron has created them from trolls, and they were cruel, strong, agile, fierce and fly; also harder than rock. They speak the Black Language of Mordor and can resist the sunlight similar to the Uruk-Hai.

So, the creature must be more intelligent and evil than your average troll. It is bread to make war on Sauron’s enemies, so it should be able to wield weapons, cover large distances and of course be deadly in battle.

With the sketches I’ve tried to capture these qualities in a robust figure with large arms and hands. Mind you, I’m not a creative designer, never been, so don’t expect some highly innovative concepts here  I’ve also really liked the ex-CIA agent character in Lilo & Stitch, so I’ve borrowed some of his proportions for the Olog.

I’d like to give him a pretty thick skin, with lighter shades of grey and a rough surface. The eyes could be yellow or yellowish green; and a warhammer or a mace should be a fitting weapon. Not sure if he should have a shield as well…

Here’s the face… I hope this doesn’t count as flooding
Pardon me for the quality, it’s a digital photo as I don’t have a scanner here at home.

Here’s the Box Monster. Still playing around with the proportions - I’d like to nail it before moving on with the scuplting.

Update

Finally had a few hours to work on it. Actually I was unhappy with the lowres cage, started a new, got even more unhappy, and went back to the original with a somewhat refreshed perspective. I think the chest/shoulder loops are starting to take shape; gotta work on the back and the arms a little more.

Very slow progress… might not be able to finish till the deadline :frowning:
Anyway, I try to steal some time every night after work and see how far I can get. I’ve also switched to Wings3D to see how far I can get with it.
