heya Apt Pupil  you’re not entering ?
i deceided to give cgtalk challenges a first run, hope to at least get a good piece for my portfolio :arteest:

alright, with my vision pretty much set, i tried myself on a concept sketch. im no concept artist at all … so this is what it looks like too  i will try to scan the image as soon as possible (i was never in need of a scanner before … ). will start modeling in the meanwhile.

this race will basically be living earth , brought to shape by restless hobbit soul’s which posess those creatures. i can remember a few lines where tolkien described hobbits as very bound to nature which was the main idea. since my sketches are kinda … rough i will explain a litte (sketches beeing scanned soon, hopefully !). the main parts of those creatures will consist of earth & flesh for the muscles / organs, as well as bones & roots for the bone cage. all of which can be found burried deeply in the ground. the rip cage as well as some other parts i plan to be opened, light here and there will give the idea of the creature beeing posessed by a soul. grass will grow on the back of the creatures.

here is a little draft of the model in progress. i will probably be using it as a rough form guide later on. its still pretty basic… but oh well its a wip challenge !

Your idea sounds fascinating, Dis

It’s a bit hard to see what that is that you are modelling right now, but I’m sure things will become clearer as you continue to update

Good luck for the challenge!

i hope so, Leigh

a small update showing progress on the skull.

neat idea. it’s hard to tell what this one looks like, but i’m definitely intrigued. gonna see how this one progresses

#8

I like the direction you are headed. Earth and flesh sounds like a whole new concept, good idea. Grass on the backs too will really give out that back to nature feel.
