quick question...

i have a quick question, from watching tutorials on matte painting, most people work at double the format required… but never explained what dpi they work at… do you work at 300dpi? or can you work at default photoshop 72 dpi at double the resolution?

thanks!

jeppers113d,

dpi is a measure of dots-per-inch, a measurement used for printing purposes.

In matte painting we’re only concerned with pixels - for 2K film res, most matte painters prefer to work at 4K.

What resolution do we need for 2K film res?

2k is just another way of saying 2048 pixels. 4k is 4096 pixels.

That’s the width of the image. The height depends on what aspect ratio you’re working on.

Wizdoc’s right - height depends on the film’s aspect ratio… Sometimes we’re asked to ‘protect’ at one aspect ratio, even though the movie’s aspect ratio will be different. This is because sometimes the DVD version’s aspect ratio will be different than the theatrical version.

For instance, the film’s aspect ratio may be 1.85:1, but we will be asked to ‘protect for 1.78:1’.
