Question regarding heads

#1

Been practising drawing heads and heads alone for a few weeks now and was wondering something.
Image(301 kb)
Is it my imagination or do the 3/4th view and side view look like different people?
Is it just because I’m bad at copying the facial features that it gives a different impression or is it because I have a bad understanding of the build up of a face?

Any help would be greatly appreciated
(I know this ain’t even a tenth of the quality you people get on a daily basis here, but bear with me.)

You’ve got some quite good groundwork there, you just need to keep drawing more faces, with guidelines to help you. Take your first 3/4 view in the image for example. The nose would extend further, obscuring more of the face and eye (unless he has a REALLY flat nose!).
The 3/4 view, side view, frontal view, down view, underside view, etc. should always look like the same person. You need to learn how to draw a head from any angle, not just the 3 classics.
Check out “Drawing the Head and Hands” over at http://www.saveloomis.org/. An invaluable resource on the features and structure of the head. Also, take time to draw skulls and all their parts. Part of the understanding of facial features comes from knowing the underlying structure.

Actually, that’s after a year of practise… started with advanced stick figures.

ok, gonna try resketching.

That’s what I’m trying to accomplish

Already am following those, so the ball and plane basic form is something I can now draw in every angle, but no idea how to go from the basic form to the more advanced ones.

Ok, will do.

Thanks for the answer

Using referance points helps. If the eye is there and I draw an imaginary line the ear will be about,… there!

Your construction lines are just an abstract approximation, and not a very accurate one. The human head is more complex than that. For the height of features you should take, for example: top of forehead, eyebrow, median eye (iris), bottom of nose, top, middle and bottom of lips, top of chin, bottom of chin. For horizontal placement, mind the width of the nose, width and center of the eyes, cheekbone, etc

Ok, I will keep that in mind, thank you

These remind me of ancient art where the human features were all represented by small curves. I’ve never seen anything like this. Yeah, you need to open up that right side of your brain and start drawing what you see. I’m detecting some sort of stylization thats maybe influenced by some type of stylized cartoon. Starting off drawing is all about working the basics and getting the hang drawing real anatomy. After you get that, you can stylize all you want.

Seratogui,

If you are going to continue to study anatomy / heads, why not start your own thread in the Anatomy Forum, and call it, Anatomy Thread of Seratogui (this is the standard naming convention for personal threads there) and we can track your progress there? The key, I think, is doing Master Copies of various heads. It’s not important at this point to try and get every detail correct, you really just need a basic understanding of the build~up of form. There is no other way to get there faster than to do lots and lots of copies of existing drawings/paintings/sculptures of the same subject matter in which you are interested.

If you create your own thread, people can track your progress as you do more exercises, and give you comments and critique.

Please note, I do not want people to create individual threads if they are only going to post a few images. We have many threads with nearly any topic you can think of for individual posts.

Cheers,
