Question re. Vue and its use

Hi everyone,

I am currently considering moving into the world of 3D for Matte painting and landscape modelling, so I am thinking about getting Vue. However, as I am totally new to 3D I am slightly confused about a few issues which I can’t seem to find any info on and would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me out. I have checked through the info on the Vue web site but still can’t seem to find some of the answers to the below.

  1. I have seen a lot of info that mentions using Vue within Maya and Cinema 4d, but I don’t understand why you would want to or need to. Is Vue not a complete program or is it a type of plug-in for the larger programs like Maya?

  2. Taking into account the above question. If I buy Vue Infinite which says it is a stand alone program. Do I need anything else to get high quality,complete results and can it render well?

  3. Please can someone recommend some good tutorials references for Vue,like online video tutorials, book etc. They must be suitable for a total beginner though.

E-on has several versions of Vue. xStream is the highest level of the program and is designed to work with other “high-end” software like Maya, 3DS, Cinema4D, etc. It is a combination of Infinite plus the plug-in for the other programs.

Infinite is a standalone program. You don’t need anything else to get some really fantastic renders!

Please, try out the program. You can download the Personal Learning Edition (PLE) for free. It’s basically a full version of Infinite/xStream (you decide what version you want to install). It’s not a time released or cripple software - it’s a full version. Renders do have a watermark and files can not be exchanged between the PLE and regular versions, but it will let you know if you like the program.

Resources are plentiful for Vue. A great book is available called Vue 6 Revealed (in most book stores and at Amazon). AsielFX offers training DVDs, and I will be teaching a Vue 6 Introduction course at LVS On-Line. Tutorials are available from e-on, renderosity.com, 3dcommune.com, and Cornocopia.

Hi and thanks for taking the time to reply, it is much appreciated. I will try the pl. edition when I get home tonight I think.

However, can you also answer another couple of questions please.

  1. Can you build and design buildings from within Vue or do u need to model in another program as this is unclear to me despite the Vue web site (which is really badly designed) saying that it is great for architecture. I could not make out if you had to create the building models in another program and bring them into Vue or if u could actually create them in Vue.

My main aim to find a program that can design realistic 3d worlds and architecture for use in matte paintings and films really. Would you say Vue is the best choice for this?

Vue is not a modeling program, but it does have some capability using Boolean objects and other things. Most users import buildings made with other programs and then render in Vue.

Can you create realistic worlds in Vue - YES! Can you create a building only using Vue? Hard, not impossible. Would I do it? No, there are tons of modeling programs. Take a look at Google’s Sketchup. Their free version is designed to make buildings and imports into Vue without needing to be converted.

I love Vue - and would highly recommend it for any workflow. No one program will solve every need, but Vue is my core program. I also use Poser, Cinema4D, ZBrush3, etc. I can loose one of them and still work, take away my Vue… No way!
