Question on UV mapping please?

#1

It’s my first time here, I hope I can find some help,
I’m using Maya 2014 and I exported the models as OBJs to mudbox, after I UV mapped, then when I wanted to go back to the maya file and redo it again, even deleted the mudbox scenes the UVs have become unresponsive dysfunctional, I can’t unfold them I can’t even’t move them in the texture editor, that’s not the first time, why does that happen? I deleted the UVs, automatic mapped, exported the models in different file formats but to no avail, I’m starting from scratch so this is frustrating, I hope someone can help… :wavey:

I forgot to edit your text colour please change it to white.
I am not exactly sure what you are trying to do but texturing is supposed to be mudbox’s strongest feature so there must be tutorials around to help you achieve what you want. I use 3dsmax in combination with zbrush but would not dream of passing uvs from one package to another. There is really no need to.

I hope a mudbox guru can help you here.
Next time post your tech questions in the best forum for them. General discussion is just for kicking back
Cheers and good luck.

i have no idea… never happened here…

could you reproduce the issue step by step…?

Sometimes when the model is big with a lot of loops, you can’t edit its UV map after you’ve exported it multiple times to mudbox as obj. and worked on it. if you reopen the first Maya scene after a while -the very one you exported the model from which had the current UV map you want to change- the UV map might freeze, you won’t be able to move the UVS, you can’t unfold them, and if it worked out and you moved a piece and tried to unfold it it will revert back to its previous fixed position.

However I managed to find a solution,
you need to Rename the UV map set, the whole UV map might get messed up and tangled, but at least only then you will be able to flexibly UV map again from the beginning though, if it is still not as flexible use automatic mapping and sew the patches, at least you’ll be able to move UVs and unfold.

and one more comment I just like to drop coz I’m so frustrated right now, why doesn’t the UV mapping apply just as perfectly on mudbox like you prepare it on Maya? like I use the checker map and everything’s brilliant and when I start sculpting on mudbox problems erupt…

could you post some images… its hard to guess without seeing it… i would need to see the mesh and the uvs in maya and the issues in mudbox…

My guess is that when you start to sculpt on a mesh you mess with the surface, and thus the uvs. You should be using your hirez MB mesh to generate maps in combination with a low res mesh that is properly uved. That is the normal modus operandi anyhow.
