Question: Lightwave work in Florida?

#1

Hi,

My wife’s family is trying to get me to move down to florida. I am trying to get into doing LW for a living so I wanted to know if any lightwave artists are making a living down there. I live in NYC now.

I keep hearing of disney closing shops and not sure how tight the market is down there.

Thanks for any info

Jason

i left florida for that reason… there isn’t much there… at least not like LA or I’m sure NYC.

Of course, if you’re damn good, you could make a real dent in the industry there.

yep, there doesn’t seem to be alot here. There is houses around, but there here and there. IF your not worried where in Florida, you could track down all the job possibilities then get hired and go there.

Seems like 90% of things are in California, then the rest in the other big east coast cities, NY, Chicago, Miami.

I have seen and would suggest learning Maya as a sceondary program, when you do find houses, their mostly Maya.

The deal with Disney, might be a little encouraging, because they have moved to more computer 3d. Not sure about what you said about closing shops.

Case closed, Cali has it going on. The rest are hit and miss but possible.

Thanks for the info.

I can send Mr. Taylor a swift kick in the ass.

The Disney thing was about a article I read that they have begun to shut down their 2D departments and begun the switch to 3D. I am not sure if the new 3D devisions are opening in Cali or in Miami at their old 2D divisions there.

Yeah it seems like I will have to get myself a seat of Maya if I want to make myself more available for the work.

Thanks,

Jay

I spoke to some people at Siggraph who were with business development along the central Florida corridor (Orlando west to Tampa). There seemed to be some activity with smaller houses, and a few things around Orlando, but I’m not clear on the specifics. I have a card for a contact back at the house. I’ll be glad to pass it along if you’re interested. Also, I met with someone in June down in Ft. Lauderdale who told me that Orlando and Miami were the spots where most production was taking place.
Of course, there’s no way to compare the markets in Florida to the west coast, but if SOCAL is not on your radar, what’s the point in comparing? Considering the cost of living, quality of life, etc . . . , Florida’s pretty appealing, and there does seem to be growth happening there. Keep plugging away, watch the job boards, and brush up on Maya.

Good luck.
