question about skin interaction with geometry (3d MAX rigging)

#1

Hi,

After I made rigging of my character I decided to make some test animation. The idea was to make him picking up some objects. Well, I found that I don’t know how to make his skin collide with an object to make deformation looks neutral. And I don’t even have any ideas except using FLEX modifier. But, as I know Flex won’t allow me to make self-interaction. How can I make a character’s skin or muscles interact with any geometry and character’s body? Give me some suggestion, pleeeeeease

Pardon my English

Thanks

well I found that Flex modifier works pretty good for simulating skin collision with different geometry  But still can’t find any way to make character to interact itself

Hey Magduke,
Can you show any examples of the skin collision you’re getting with flex? This is something I’ve messed with before but was never very happy with the results.

As far as self collision goes, you could try faking it where necessary using a Volume Select and a Push modifier. In the 3dsMax forum here there are some examples of people using that technique with acceptable results.

Maya has an actual collision deformer which preserves volume and everything. Hopefully with the new team in place at AD Max will really start stepping up it’s character animation and rigging capabilities. Presently though, at least for me, pulling off some of these effects and having them look really good is not all that easy.
