It seems that those SSS renders from the iceCubes can be created just straight out of the box. I just put the diffusion shader into the mental-ray material “slot” on the groupNode.

It also renders very quick, cause for this test i used a pentium3 450 Mhz, and it was finished within 6 seconds. Maybe because i used not to much poly’s on this test.

By the way, that is a very cool render marmphi !!

Hey all,

Nice shader !
And slow as hell too! :surprised

here`s a quick test from me.

No linux support… no production use.

We helped Mark port Lightengine SSS to linux. If anyone can get me the source code, I"ll be happy to do the same again for everyone.

Haha, well he did only just release it. It’s a beta version and he’s not releasing the source until the final version.

Not that both values above don’t have to add up to 1. Direct scattering is normally pretty dark, so you can use 3 or more to get nice intensive colors. Just play around till it looks pretty.

In the Diffusion.mi file the max value of direct and indirect scattering is limited to 1. You can just change the max value to 10 for example.

you can use ‘softmin’ and ‘softmax’ on mi declaration to get the nice maya feature of incremental sliders…

here the update…

I know very little about Maya>Mental Ray integration so forgive me if this is as stupid a question as I think it probably is. Why is it that the shaders effects are showing up fine when I open the render view window, but when I do a batch render I get nothing at all? I know it has to be some tiny thing I am not doing but I can’t seem to find out what it is.

Thanks

Francesca…see again your PM, please! :surprised

When you do a batch render from windows, it will default to the maya renderer, therfore the shader won’t show up, if you also press the render button in the shelf you will have the same problem, if however you go to the render menu set and choose batch render there, it will use whatever renderer is set in the globals,

you can batch render to mental ray from windows hoever if you know the command line command, however i can’t think of it off the top of my head, i think its in the docs, anyway i have that set up as a seperate contextual menu command.

hope that helps

as for this luvly SSS shader,

heres me render i did the day i found this shader

and the animation of it, its a bit dark but trust me its good if you have bright gamma settings like me

click for the the animation its only 500k

That hand is nice but it needs some internal geometery towards the end it looks like its made from wax… Some internals bones, viens etc would make it much more realistic i recon…

#111

It works fine with osx! just click on the maya 6 icon and right click(a menu will appear), then go
show contents, and place the things where they are suppose to be…

#112

That’s good to know that it works on OSX on a Mac, but I’m running Maya 5. I’m still outta luck…

#113

I plugd the diffuse out into the incandescence of my shader.

Test render:

#114

Hi!

Here is my diffusion test with bump specular and dirt shader!

#115

I can’t wait for the linux version!

#116

Hello, guys! How do you use this shader -

  • put in ambient/incandescence
    or
-use it in mental ray->material shader
i’m trying test this shader and when i use it as mental ray -> material shader i have black surface.
can you advice how to do this right?

#117

Hi shserge

I used it as color.
May be your problem is that you have to link the diffusion shader to a light…

#118

Hi Gameleo! Nice light on the face!
I thought it is new mental ray material, anyway i try at color and as material - have black. I connected light there too :hmm:

#119

Tnx

Mhhh, I don’t know now!
It do some message of warning in output window?

#120

I used shader in color and chnages intensity to 10, and see how it works  i don’t undestand why it is black when i use it as mental ray->material (shader lies with mental ray materials)?
have warning: RC 0.5 error 081003: shader “Diffusion” called mi_sample_light with unknown light tag 0
