Use the mix8layer as your objects material and connect the other shaders to it.
Mix8layers works much like layers in photoshop.

so i am connecting the outvalue of dirtmap to the illum channel of the diffuse and the outvalue of diffuse to a layer in the mix8node
does that mean that i can use my texture maps in the mix8 layers

i just posted a pic in the gallery using this shader.

the connections i used where nothing not already mentioned. it was a little unpredictable at times – after i thought i got it right and moved the model i would get some artifacts. the belly for instance has a bit of a sharp shadow and the leg a little harse too. i think i need to get more familar with the settings – it’s very fast compared to the other sss shaders i’ve tried.

i tried it with HDRI the skin looked wierd so i ended up using two seperate passes – HDRI and a keylight pass and mixed them.

I love the ways the shader looks, and the enthusiam of the group here. . .I have read almost every post on this thread and yet i still cant get it to work.

maya crashes every time i click the new shaders in hypershade…so I loaded a scene someone else works on, scene loads but doesnt render (errors in the output window)

I have copied paste revised and rerevised the .rayrc file

what could I be doing wrong?

mind you, this is after I scoured the thread

if you know what I am doing wrong, please let me know, i implore you! I can live without the shader, but not with not knowing why it doesnt work!:sad:

the agony continues…i just installed 6.01(you know just trying to see maybe how it went wrong)

and it still crashes.

I press the icons and maya freezes for 5 sec. and then disappears…

has this happened to anyone else??

Aadams: i read your posts really quit – but in the error message you posted the “/” switch direction in the paths maya’s not finding – maybe your rayrc file has the "/"going the wrong way. :shrug:

Hello everyone thanks for the shader and info im new to mental ray and im having a problem with this shader, i get good sss on my character until i turn on raytrace shadows then it dissapears. this has only happened on surfaces with openings and it may have to do with the fact that the character is subd’s. the sss appears extreme around the openings in the model then dissapears when the shadows are turned on. Any suggestions mental ray wizards thanks

I am having that same problem with the artifacts you described above. the renders are almost exactly just how i want them except for a few dark polygonal artifacts at the base of the neck. how did you deal with this if you dont mind me asking. could it have something to do with the fact that im using maya subd surfaces?
