Sorry I coudn’t understand, what does “pass with alpha” mean? Color contains alpha info too (in mental ray).
Is Oren-Nayar shader too slow? (without wrap)

Hey guys, just been experimenting with the diffusion shader, and also did a snow shader tutorial and was wondering if i could combine the two for say the floor of a snow cave woth a transparency map, I havent really used the layered shader and read in another thread MR shaders dont work too well, so I’m curious whether it can be dont this way with maya 6, or perhaps there is another method.
Cheers
MunCH
Hi,
I’ve been trying to make since out of the entire thread. It seems as if there is a majority of Maya 6.0 users and few 5.0’s. I have tried everything this thread has to offer without success. I’ll break it down to you all.
Maya 5.01
Poly Object
1 Spot Light connected to the Diffuse Shader
Diffuse Shader connected to Ambient of Blinn.
No Caustics, GI, or FG.
MR
Now is there anyone who can be clear enough to explain if I need to emit photons; do I need FG, GI or Caustics? Do I connect the Diffuse shader to the custom MR shader tabs? Does the shader need some transparency? Everybody is having great success with it and I know something is being left out.
Fantastic samples everybody.
Thanks!
/Fred
Can anyone jot down the settings for one of your characters? Just to get a rough idea on what to tweak.
Thanks!
If you’re a ‘Special Effects Director’ you should know this stuff - no offense
If, by some slim chance, you’re ignorant after the required knowledge, in the most friendly manner, I’d suggest you take the time to read back through the thread
Atwooki
I would like to clear something up.
There has been a mix up in the log in’s. I’m Nottoshabi a character animator/ rigger. The post above this one, is posted by my friend Fred. Wich is fmalmgren.
Sorry for the mix up.
Never mind Atwooki… Didn’t mean to be ignorant. After all -Plug it into the the Ambient Color doesn’t get much clearer than that
The results are just brilliant with the touch of a button
I’ll go read the thread again… … …
How’s it going Mike! Sorry for the mixup. I still had you logged in over here.

Just a test I’ve been messing around with for a scene I’m doing. Came out pretty well I think for what I want =)
Bill thats about the funniuest looking cg object I have seen in a while, good job, I wont guess what it is because I have a pretty wierd imagination hehe but Mick Jagger or some sort of plant comes to mind
Good job
MunCH
Haha thanks guys. It’s a biomechanical breathing system for a structure. I’m still messing around with the shader on it, but it came out pretty well I think. The diffusion shader on it really brought out the “funk” in it =)
well I wouldnt be putting my mouth anywhere near it lol, unless I was unconscious or she whispered sweet nothings :bounce:
Keep it up…
MunCH
Kinda cool shader you got there mate.

And here with Diffusion-shader

Does someone know, why MR renders that odd white thing, even the texture and the model are fine?
ps. anyone got good hand-textures?
can someone tell me why do I get this message when I plug diffuse into incadesent
API 0.0 error 301032: while defining material “Diffusion2SG”: undefined shader “Diffusion2”
API 0.0 error 301031: call to undeclared function “Diffusion”
API 0.0 error 301036: undefined shader “Diffusion2”
thanks
Hi donvlatko!
Have you put these two lines in your maya.rayrc file?
link “{MAYABASE}/lib/Diffusion.{DSO}”
mi “{MAYABASE}/include/Diffusion.mi”
Could solve the problem…
Atwooki
yes I did and I am confused:(
and here how it looks

damn I forgot to put this line echo “mental ray for Maya - startup done”
can someone tell me what is the best light for this shader?HDRI?
So I got some bad artifacting using subScatter, so I decided to try this one out and guess what… different kind of artifacting!
Anyone experienced this type of issue?
