PROJECT PHOENIX ENTRY: Tim Shedelbower

#1

Hi everyone.

Thanks Brian for sponsoring this contest, should be fun. You gave me the nudge I needed to dig a little deeper into EIAS.

Well, here it goes … I’m sticking with the original mythological concept but emphasizing the idea of the search for the phoenix’s feather which possessed eternal life.

STORY:
Atop the tallest date palm, the lone phoenix nests for rebirth. The nest blazes into the heavens as the masses gather below. Finally, their quest for the feather of the phoenix will be fulfilled thus granting them eternal life.

Sketch is attached but not sure if it will show since this is my first time trying. If it doesn’t I’ll provide a link in a reply. Now, like everyone else, need to find the time!

Welcome aboard!

Have fun and good luck. It should be a great learning experience for everyone.

Here’s what I have so far. Used fiberforge for the feather, onyxtree for the date palms and silo for the hand. Tried to portray a Burne Hogarth style for the hand to give it a near death look since they are supposed to be grasping for eternal life.

Love the tendons in the hand. And the date palms. :applause:

I am using onyxtree as well! Are you going to split your palms into seperate elements so you can apply your own textures? I normally split the fronds out and apply transmission to them. Gives them a nice translucent look.

This competition is looking harder & harder to win. :banghead:

Must work faster and harder.

Thanks Buggsy. Yes, I’ll probably split the fronds from the trunk so I can add a bark texture. Haven’t tried using transmission on fronds before, but sounds like a great idea. Might use VLife from Konkeptoine’s C3 for a mossy looking texture at the base of the trunks.

I was just thinking the same about the competition, but heh, it’s all for fun.

Here’s my modeling image. The phoenix and hand were created with Silo. The feather was created with FiberForge and the trees with OnyxTree. The info at the bottom (renderer time, etc.) is for the final image which I’m still working on and will post when presentable.

That’s great Tim. Love the models and feathers!

#8

Thanks Richard. How’s the work bench coming?

Couldn’t work on the project for a week. Will post new images tonight. The idea was to model lots of tidbits to make it look as a real workbench… well bad idea… Lots of tidbits= lots of time.

#10

the modelling looks very impressive:eek:…especially the hand…

Thanks for the comments. Here’s a link to my latest render. I tried :banghead: to meet the 97K upload limit on file size but it is not large enough for acceptable compression quality. Hope a link is acceptable for the final contest entry.

Wow! That’s a look I haven’t seen done with EI before.
Brilliant!

#13

wow! this is really nice!

#14

Tasty! Excellent work, that render time deserves an award in itself!
Ian

#15

Thanks guys. The quick render time sure helps tweaking the image!

Excellent image!

I can feel that prize slipping away. Excuse me while I wave it goodbye!:hmm:

Love that ploom of yellow smoke and the feathers around the neck. I hate you (just kidding). How did you do it. Did you use Dante & Fire?

Only two things I can give crit on.

  1. The stars in the background are a bit blue for me and I think it would be good if they had a greater sparkle about them.

  2. The EI logo on the back of the hand seems to be an after thought. I’d leave it off or find a more fitting place for it.

Heh Buggsy. Don’t know about the prize, there are some good ideas developing! How’s your scene coming? The F111 looks great! :applause:

The yellow smoke is Dante; the feathers on the bird and floating in the air are FiberForge; the red flame above the wings is Fire. I agree with you on the stars and logo. Was trying to get a tattoo effect for the logo but just can’t get it to work so I will probably remove it.

Thanks for the critique.

Astonishing imagery! Congratulations. Nice smoke with Dante, all I can get out of it is a headhache…

#19

ohhhh…there was some headache there! :banghead:

Very nice Tim!!!

I’m curious what kind of machine that was rendered on to get that awesome time. I just about fell out of my chair when I saw the poly count and render time.

Brian, maybe that is another template field to be added.
