Project Humanity

#1

I’ve been following some forum topics here on CGTalk and I’ve seen very wonderful work by the people in this forum. I was wondering if you guys can share some advice on my current project?

Project Humanity is a 3D diorama-based animation that would show people giving aid to others in times of great disasters. In this project, the major disaster would be based on the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines.

=====================================================================

During the first part of it, farmers help a fellow build his hut near the rice field he tends to. It is part of their culture to help out those they can for almost nothing at all. They finish the hut and celebrate afterward and not ask anything from the hut’s owner.

Troubles arrive when earthquakes start to hit the neighborhood. Some people had started evacuating already. The farmer cannot leave yet because he cannot just leave his farmland.

Not too soon after, the Mt. Pinatubo erupts. Ashen clouds darken the skies and envelopes the surrounding villages. Ash deposits on the rooftops of buildings and houses became too heavy and collapsed many buildings and homes. The farmer’s hut was one of those that were destroyed.

his farmland and his hut destroyed, the farmer is forced to flee his ravaged home. Out in the rain of ashes with other evacuees, the villagers tread the long roads barely seeing through the falling ashes. Suddenly, above the rumble of the volcano, the roar of engines made their way to the villagers. Bright lights pierced the thickness of the ashes and shined hope to the villagers. They climbed aboard the large military trucks and headed straight out of the ash’s blanket into the nearest evac center where they stayed.

There they waited weeks before they were able to go home. The farmer made his way back to his decimated abode. In awe of what happened and of fear of what will happen to him next, he stood there. Soon a villager comes up to him and offers help. Then more come to help the farmer rebuild. And within a few days, the farmer once again has a hut. thanks to the many people who have helped him in times the volcanic calamity.

====================================================================

Estimated total running time is 5 to 6 minutes.

For now, I’m building up my asset library for the project.

I’ll be posting stuff real soon and I would greatly appreciate your feedback and advice for my modeling and my compositing.

Thank you in advance!

Here’s my current model of a generic head to be used in the project. I’m still wrestling with some anatomical and topological issues. I hope these wires can give you some idea on how to shed light to my situation.

One of the items on the checklist for this project is an asset library. It is to contain all the models and textures that I’ll be using for the animation project. I’m having a really rough start. Here’re some stuff I’m breaking a sweat on.

After modeling and clone arraying the leaves on theroof I wound up with around 2M faces.

been watching stuff from laugh factory. It was really fun. Meanwhile, I’ve managed to output these.

sad thing is, when I put the body cover back on. It shadows most of the other parts… yipeee :rolleyes:

Hi,

Great job on the modeling. It is a big project and it seems that it requires a lot of effects and animation. How many people working on that? Have you got a storyboard?
My suggestion so far I think, first to model low-poly models and build placeholders first before going to complex models. A 2 mil faces for a hut wouldn’t be necessary, if you want to build a village.
Think about the camera shots as well. You don’t have to model things that can not be seen by the camera.
Good luck with the project.

-Thanks.

Hey thanks!

I'm planning to redo the roof and just texture out the coconut leaves soon. The hut will be on its own on a rice field. I'll post the storyboard and part of the animatics real soon! (because I'm required to.) I'm presenting my stuff to my student project adviser tomorrow. keeping fingers crossed!

I finally got around some facial modeling hurdles of mine. mainly topology. It’s not THAT good yet, but I think it came out pretty well for starters. He doesn’t look old though. :expressionless:

My skills would be of no use to you, but I wanted to chime in and say I love the idea. Good luck and I look forward to watching your progress.
