Preferred fileformat for multipass-compositing in cg-shorts?

#1

Hi,

Can someone point out to me what fileformat would be preferrable to use when compositing cg-elements? (only CG, no real footage) and why?

it depends a little on your comp software. in nuke and fusion i would go for EXR. EXR can handle all your renderpasses in one file (good to work with in nuke), its up to 32bit float, good compression and if stored with the right settings amazing fast (for nuke go with scanline and zips compression)

dont know how well AE and composite handles EXR

PNG is up to 16bit integer and seems a little slow to decompress
TIFF is also up to 32bit float and if uncompressed quiet fast, but huge

stay away from TGA (only 8bit integer) and JPEG (lossy compression and only 8bit integer)

Hi,

Thank you!
I’ve thought of EXR but was unsure regarding speed. I think I’ll compose either in nuke or in Fusion. Thanks for the compression tip for Nuke.
