PowerBook G4 17inch

#1

I’m looking to buy a 17 inch and I want to put a 2.5 10K drive in it. The 5400RPM drive seems WAY too slow for what is needed. Even if the board is speedy, the slow drive is a BIG issue for me. Would I short out something in the process? Is there a 2.5 10K drive that has the same pin count as the 17inch? :banghead:

I don’t think there is a 2.5 10k…In fact I am sure there is not one. get a 7200RPM. and don’t do all your work at base. Do it at P1.

Your post makes no since. first you say you want to put one in then you ask if they even make one…heh

drive speed should not really be a huge issue unless you are doing film/hd stuff. If this is the case then maybe you might want to look at using an external raid. A firewire 800 lace 1gb disk is a good affordable way to do this. it can be partitioned to run striped raid and through the firewire 800 port should be pretty quick.

In reality if you are doing lots of HD/film stuff then you sprobably wont be using a laptop. We are mostly HD and our G5’s are rigged (dual 2.7gHz 6gb ram etc ! )

I was doing research for onset editing, and/or extended time away from the quad that we ordered. I’m looking to get as much done as I can before getting to the G5. I will now research portable HD solutions. Thanks for the advice.

If you’re doing field work you can save a lot of resources by proxying to lower resolution content. Depending on your footage it can be a real life saver for working on a laptop!

Get a firewire 800 drive for all your media. It will be able to transmit much faster to your computer then the internal drive.

I’ve run internally on a7200 speed drive on a 15" and it can get painful at times. I’d put the money into an external drive (where you’re not paying for 2.5") and max out your ram.

…that getting an external is the way to go. the new PBs are 7200 rpm anyway. that just makes me want a stable 10000 rpm drive for a PB. ACK - stifling a laugh…

Thanks ALL
