The elf is not even half finished and I’m planning on doing away with alien arms coming out of his head because originally the image was going to be apart of a bigger concept piece (you can see some of the other characters I was going to work on in the top sketch) but unfortunately as of the moment I do not have time to pursue this so the lone elf will have to do. I’m quite happy with the elf so far because it is the very first time I’ve tried digital painting and creating an image without the use of black/colour lines to hold the design together, my work is normally flat bright cartoons with no shadow or texture at all, example here:

The Elf was done in Photoshop Elements using a tablet. I worked from my original sketch which I first coloured in in flat base colours (you can see the body and hair is still presently in this cartoon looking state) and then I proceeded to shadow, light and colour in the details. I worked on seperate layers, duplicating the layer each time I wanted to add something new such as shadow or light. I left the original lineart in and just work up to them, eventually painting over the top of them and blending’em out as I get to’em. To help I took some photo’s of myself pulling the expression of the character to self as references for shadows and proportions of the face. It took a couple of hours to do, quite long really but because it was my first and so I took my time, anything I do next will probably be done in half the time.

If I’m happy with the final design I am planning on making a more in depth tutorial of my progress if it would be of any use to anyone else.

Hi everyone…
Well I’m pretty new at this…& amateur too…so I’m just walking my first steps in photoshop/wacom painting…
I’d like to share with you a WIP of what could be a funny death character…
first with no background, & then with a downloaded background, just to set up an environment…

I know there’s a long way to go from here, but you have to start somewhere…
Please critique!!! Be as mean as you can be!
Most of the work around here is pretty intimidating…

Later on I’ll post some steps of this…

First visit to this thread… I love you all

#122

MichaelZHsee how did you make the detail on the concrete/ground. is it a texture, brush or?

Thanks

#123

Hey!
First of all: Great thread! helped me a lot!:buttrock:
Many thanks to Kaladen for his great work. This was very usefull.
One Question: Did u use your bruches on 100% opacity all the time?
I could imagine that it would be very hard to create smooth transitions this way.
And i really want to know how create custom texture brushes

Looking forward to see more great stuff here!
(and i apologize for my terrible english)

Great Thread! Its really cool to see different proccesses that other artists go through. Very inspiring. Thanks.

I put together a little step by step with a portrait I did of Christina Ricci.

Thanks again for this thread.

Ello, great thread!

This is a 1.5 hour speed paint for a client but I want to go back into it one more time based on forum crits. Feedback and hard crits encouraged!

A) Quick application of colour and basic mountain shape (I used the polygon select tool for this) in photoshop.

B) Imported it into ArtRage2 and put in some textured line work. Really easy to do this, very nice and intuitive program.

C) Back in photoshop now, adding some soft clouds trying to pull directional focus with my strokes.

D) On a new layer I add some block shapes for the foreground, this will be a bridge leading to a tower. I used the polygon select tool again for most of this.

E) Started adding in details - looking back I should have defined depth more by making the tower lighter.

F) I had to add in another tower for this job - why didn’t they tell me at the start!? So I did that really quickly but you can see how much further away it looks just by making it lighter or allowing some of the background colours fade over the top.

G) Final touches. I’m pretty happy but still with problems:
The mountain looks too high in contrast, needs to fade out more and this is ruining the composition - the tower and the mountain seem to be fighting for focal attention.
Have I overdone that bloom on the left there? Is bloom the new lens flare? …NO! …NOOOoooo!
I’m not so good at perspective and I didn’t measure up for this one, so not sure if that feels right.
Is it too dark?

thanks for reading.

Been a while since I’ve been here, but I’m trying to get back into the swing of things. Anyway, I did a timelapse video of this sucker so you can see how it was drawn. Did this on my Nintendo DS with Colors! (it’s a homebrew painting program).
