Portrait - Tom Morello and Ibanez Artstar

#1

Here is an illustration ive been working on for the past couple of weeks. You can view the WIP thread here.

The man is Tom Morello. Former lead guitarist with ‘Rage Against The Machine’, and more recently with the newly formed ‘Audioslave’ which are basically Rage but with a new frontman. Slung over his shoulder is his Custom Built Ibanez Artstar, a replica of an old 60’s Vox, which he used primarily for the song ‘Guerilla Radio’. (trivia for any die-hard Rage fans out there.)

I used a picture i found in an old Kerrang magazine as a refrence, Photoshop CS and my newly aquired Wacom Graphire 3.

Hope you like.

Hey Hardnox, you’ve got some good stuff happening there, the shadow on his face looks wrong though. Too dark compared to other shadowy areas.

I like the paint style you have overall, nice.

haha… rockin man. morello. RATM was my favorite band for a long time… im not so angry anymore… i guess zack is probably not so angry anymore either.

as for the picture… it could be touched up a bit. can tell you used color burn or multiply for the shadows. although tedious. going in with 10-20% airbrush for the shadows and highlights would help.

i think if you zoom into the picture and add more details it would help. crispy the image with sharpen filter and see what that does. the eyes and guitar will have the most noticable difference.

usually when i do a portrait/skin tone, i will grayscale the original and play with the brightness and contrast to help me see where the shadows are… blah blah. my 2 cents.

Great choice of subject though! and nice painting skills. keep on.

i just realised that the colours on my monitor were completely screwed up… it was on heavy contrast and low brightness…i sorted it and now the image looked shocking…so i touched it up and uploaded a better version…hopefully this will look much better.
