porcelain problems (10.5 version 15)

#1

I’m using version 15 of the 10.5 beta and I’m tring to import the porcelain material off the 2003 cd into a project. I get a weird problem in my project workspace. I can’t grab the material, and in the image below you can see that the material is sort of messed up over the other workspace items.

Has anyone else encountered this?

You can see that the porcelain material is all mixed up with the item that should be below it. If I try to grab the material, I grab the folder beneath it instead.

How did you get version 15 when the latest is version 14?

I don’t think this is a porcelain issue, but a screen redraw issue. I’ve had this happen to me in the past. Once I updated my video card drivers, it went away.

my bad, my fault… I meant version 14, not 15.

I have had this myself. Report it to hash with the image and graphics card info and it will get fixed quicker.

The workaround for now is to set up a filter (arrow at top-right of pws). You don’t have to name it, just select Actions as the thing to include. Then you will have a pws clicktab with only materials in. You can drag it from here. Sometimes you need to click around it first but it will work eventually. Also, this problem tends to clear up if you save then load again.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

I did report this to support, and they sent a response to the list saying “If anyone has a project doing this send it to us because we can’t recreate it” so i don’t know if anything will happen.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Had the same problem and got the same response…and it’s still the same error in the release version of AM.

To those of you that have this problem, what kind of computer (CPU, ram, graphics card, AM version are you running).

I’m running a P4 1670mhz, 1 gig RAM, NVIDIA Quadro2 Pro (tested with drivers 6.14.10.4109 drivers and the 6.14.10.4403). I have another computer I’m going to test it on tonight or tomorrow.

This happen on my home computer too. :frowning: It’s a DualP3 733mhz, 512mb RAM, GeForce4Ti (driver version 4403 if I remember correctly), running AM10.5. (10n works fine).

If I filter out materials, i get some weird effect too. If I expand the material it expands, but if I try to click on any of the expanded stuff each one vanishes. Very strange and annoying.

I wonder if this happens on all GeForce based cards.

I sometimes got the same. (Not using AM much at the moment)
p4 1.4 Leadtek Geforce 4 ti. Latest Nvidia drivers.
Looks like it might be a Geforce thing?

#9

I have an ATI so it isn’t that. I also have an AMD 2400. Not much of a pattern forming here.

#10

Could it be the OS version. I’m running Windows2000Pro, SP3 on the single processor P4 machine (the dual one also runs Win2kpro…don’t remember the service pack version though). Maybe it’s a difference between Win2K and XP?

#11

You could be on to something, I’m on windows 2000 sp3.

#12

Ok, tested it with SP4…and no difference. :frowning: So this might mean that it only works correctly in WinXP.

I sent a mail to suport, pointing out it probably wasn’t graphics card. It turns out they’ve tested it on some older machines running Win2K, and it worked fine there. Which is bad, if Hash can’t reproduce this bug…they won’t be able to fix it. :frowning: Any suggestions on what else this might be?

For now I’ll just do all my work in 10n (which works great so far), then import to 10.5 for the nice multipass and porcelain rendering.

Maybe it was the particular beta I had it happening in, because I’ve been using the just released 10.5 non-beta and it’s not giving me any of this problem.

#14

Nope, in my case that didn’t help. I just downloaded the latest release version 10.5a and tested it. And it still doesn’t work correctly. :annoyed:

Yesterday I tested a lot of different things to see if I could get around it somehow or make it go away. Chaning OpenGL settings, different resolutions, changing settings in AM, turning on my second monitor and running AM there…whatever I thought of that might possibly fix this…and nothing worked. I think this has nothing to do with graphics cards, but why it happens I don’t know.

Next resort would be to format the whole computer, and re-install Windows and AM (and nothing else)…to see if that works.

I have had this problem in the past. But I did a little test just now in 10.5a and it run´s ok.
Maybe it can be the open gl driver? just a though.

Anyways I am running on
win XP
AMD xp2200, Geforce ti4200 128mb, 512ram.

Detonator 41.09

#16

installed Detonator 44.03 just now and this isn´t showing up either with them. So it´s problably not a driver issue.

#17

If I may add my own observations, I am still working on Win98 and I have two different computers on which this happens sometime. One is GeForce II based and the other is ATI-AIW based. So that rules out the OS or the driver focus.

I observed that I get this in very specific circumstances like loading a specific material or something. But the problem is that I can’t reproduce it myself in an enough reliable way that It can be usefull for support to find out. Typically, when I close A:M and reboot it, the problem disapear so it’s kind of normal Hash can’t reproduce it.

I currently am on the impresion that this is the result of accumulation of a sequence of actions from my part with the app. This problem happens since the first v9 beta versions although it happens much less often now. And I am starting to feel a kind of pattern as to when this happens.

It happens fastest for me when I’m moving bones around in the Project Workspace…but, it happens eventually to me no matter what I do. Of course I’m still using 9.51e, so it may be a different problem by now. I’m also using Win98 with a GeForce4 MX 420.

When things start looking strange, I save everything and reboot. If I don’t it will eventually crash.

I’m going to be upgrading soon…maybe it will be cured when I do.

#19

I think I just managed to track down why this happens.

If I turn off the preview window in the open window everything works fine. Now I can actually work in 10.5a.

Interestingly enough, if I try to turn on the preview in 10n (which was off to start with), AM simply crashes to desktop (at least when selecting materials).

I would be interested in hearing if this applies to the rest of you guys and gals.
