Polymodeling question

#1

Hi all,

I’m trying to extrude a shape out of a cylinder but i can’t find how the control loops should go.
when i apply a turbosmooth i get pinching in the corners.

Can someone solve this?

Start with a denser cage before the subdivision.

1.Starting cage with more res (just subdivide 8 sided cylinder once or twice depending on the kind of details you need)

2.Subdivision level 1

3.Subdivision level 2

Adjust support edges if you want sharper corners.

thanks mate!

I always like to keep my geo as simple and low poly as possible.
your solution gave me a little to much res to work with
but then i tried with a cylinder with 16 sides and that worked better for me
(still have a little bit of pinching in the corners when viewed from certain angles, but since its for a small detail…)

guess for this shape i indeed had to work with a little more edges.

No problem. I understand where you’re coming from about density but i’d rather spend 10 seconds on modeling something that simple than try to solve pinching issues for half an hour

I had the same ‘fetish’ to keep my cages at 16 - 24. However dont be afraid to use more!!! It saves time and thats important. My standard cylinder is now 32 and goes up to 48. Trust me. Dont torture yourself. Once you get into more complex geo you will have to do it.

ps: apply a material with more specularity to your model and you will see that there are some things off with your highpoly.
