Plugin for texturing?

#1

Is there a plugin for wings that will let you either: 1. export with UV’s or 2. create uv’s to unwrap and texture?

I need something like this, or at least a way to work around this.

Thx

there is autouv in wings I havent used in a long time but I remember it wasnt to hard to figure out, it looks like its changed alot since the last time I tried it. Anyway to check it out go into object mode and select your mesh, after its selected you can access autoUV with rightclick uvmapping(experimental).

thx, i didn’t think that you could apply any textures in wings, how mistaken I was. BUT, how do I make the unfolded uv’s, so that I can texture them? The options aren’t very extensive, it just says like, unfold, apply texture, and something about sectors and stuff.

Here’s something that might help:

I’ve edited the UV’s, but now I can’t figure out how to get my textures onto my model. I’ve got the Outliner window open, and I’ve tried pretty much every logical option in there, and I’ve tried to import them from the main Geometry window.

Anyone know what to do here?1?

Here’s what you can try:

  1. Select your object
  2. Right click and select UV Mapping
  3. Section or object by edges or faces, however you choose to do it. You said you figured out how to get the UV map setup ok. You can just select the faces, or you can also select the edges and then “Mark edges for cut”
  4. Close the UV Mapping window, and “Save UV Coords and texture”
  5. In your Outliner, you should see a new “diffuse” item. Left-click it to highlight it, and then Right-Click and “export”. Export it as a tga, so call the export “uvmap.tga” or something like that.
  6. Open the uvmap.tga file in your favorite photo-editing app, be it The Gimp or Photoshop. Edit it, and apply your textures or whatever in here. It’s good to add a new layer, and make your changes on a new layer, keeping the uvmap as the bottom layer for reference. Then, when your done, save the image, again as a tga, with the lower layer not visible, unless you still wan’t to be able to see the lines created by exporting the uvmap from wings3d
  7. In wings3d, import the edited tga with: file -> import image
  8. Make sure your object is still selected, and right click and select UV Mapping again. This time, you want to “edit UVs”
  9. Left-click on the new image in the “Outliner” window, which should be the filename of the tga you saved, in this case “test”
  10. With “test” highlighted, click and drag “test” over your UV Mapping window. Your UV Map texture should appear in the UV Map window
  11. Close the UV Map window, and select “save UV Map and Texture”. Your object should now reflect the new uvmapped texture you applied.

I hope this is what you were asking for. Also, I likely used the wrong terminology in a couple places. That’s because I’m very new to modelling, but just happened to have figured this out.

Hope this help!

Drag 'n drop an image to a material.
Use the file menu to import images the first time…

Hi there,

I too am using the auto UV function in wings 3d and finding it quite good, if you do work beforehand regarding preffered cut lines etc.

One tip, (which you may already know but took me a while to figure out) if after you project by feature and it halts at the unfolding stage stating that cannot generate map with holes then take the offending area (which wings kindly highlights for you) and spcify a cut line through it.

While we are on the subject, anyone know how to get the unfolded texture out of wings for painting ina bitmap editor (i.e. other than screencapture)?

Cheers

JA

Thx alot lakcaj, that explanation was beautiful. I just let wings do a projection for me then unfold. I thought it was funny that I tried to put my texture onto my model by dragging, but it never occured to me to try it thru the UV window.

jamacsween, to export the image, I found out that you just open the outliner window in the main bar with Window>Outliner, then either export it or make external. I don’t know what the difference is between both of them, so try both.

Thx for all the help everyone. :bounce: :bounce:
