Photoshop CS doesnt like Money?

#21

Well I just tried to open that file, and yep, you get that dialog box ???

  1. The File is not illegal, (The Resolution is to low) so what the prob ?

  2. You can open it in ImageReady CS, Scale it up 2X, Copy to Photoshop CS, and scall it down 50%, so you can get it in without to much trouble.

  3. What other images will it not allow you to open ???

#22

I personally don’t have a problem with this

#23

I think the main problem is they dont inform you that there are files / pictures that you are not going to be allowed to open.

The Sample picture would not be printable or usable for creating funny money, due to the resolution being so low, and the word SAMPLE on it in several places, and it only being 1 side of the money.

The second question, is what else will you not be allowed to open ? Can anyone place a MagicMark on there files to prevent anyone from opening them, or is it only the goverment that has access to the MagicMark ?

No idea, i dont have 8. Just posting what I read on Adobe forums myself:D

Copying of ANY currency is ILLEGAL, so why should scanning it not be copying? I know a lot of graphics on tv and websites are of currencies, but still. A lot of images that are scanned are not supposed to be scanned, either. Such as magazine pictures, or pages from books. It’s only fair that people are stopped from breaking the law, I guess.

I do feel a little bad that Photoshop now offcially has a limitation.

To me, the main issue(s) are:

  1. Software that I paid money for is now censoring content.
  2. The increased load time/decreased performance if the app is checking every single image that I load into it.

I’m not overly concerned with it. I’m still at PS6 and don’t really have any plans to upgrade. I usually upgrade every other version but they lost me this time around with the activation.

  1. Of course copying money is illegal, but its still some sort of censorship. This censorship of dollars alone isn’t that troubling, but the fact that it is a small step in the direction of further censorship does worry me.
Large restrictive measures always come in small increments.

  2. Photoshop apparently has some sort of image content analysing feature! (based on existing pictures of course)
Now please, put it to good use people! This could prove very usefull in CG applications.

i have a problem with this, when i used to work on conferences i frequently had to scan in money for use within financial presentations etc… or for any number of stings and other videos for “City” companies. if i were still doing that corporate work this would be a royal pain in the ass, and because of the nature of having clients literally sitting behind you while you work in those sorts of jobs would not make you seem any more profesional with errors like that coming up, and having to use workarounds in order to stop eating into the clients time.

As long as it is only in digital form you cant buy anything with it. So it is not really a reproduction of a bill

I dont know about other countrys but it certainly is legal here in germany to copy magazines and newspapers. The copyright owner even get money for it.
And the big problem with this is:

  1. Only real big companys will be able to protect theyr stuff this way.
  2. This wont stop any professional thief from stealing copyrighted material. It will only harass the the average guy (and gal).

Fuc-king-hell I thought this was a hoax, I just tried it myself on an English £20 and it does this!

I DO have a problem with this.

  1. I can’t scan money as a texture for a 3D scene

  2. I can’t make a financial powerpoint presentation with images of money

  3. I cant make a sign for a store front asking customers to watch out for fake money with an image of what to look for

  4. Do they think in a million years that stopping you from loading the picture into PS-CS will have even a remote affect on illegally made money? I mean even the slightest hint of a difference?

  5. Will the new PS call the police on me for peadophillia when I scan in a picture of my little sister at the beach running round on the beach with no clothes on?

I think the worst part is that this isnt an advertised features Adobe have mislead, if not downright lied to everyone.

Imagine if it stopped you using

  1. The McDonalds Golden Arches
  2. The Mircosoft logo
  3. An photo of the president
  4. The Nike swish
    5)…

All things which could arguabley be copyright and their representation easily recognised. Imagine how much money Adobe could make if it charged $ 5 million to lock a logo/image unless the appropriate adobe supplied plugin is used. Disgraceful  .

well if it has UK money as well it must have most of the worlds thats gonna be a drag on the system! maybe we should all mail our work to adobe and demand they add that into photoshops protection lol

Accordong to Slashdot

American and Euro notes will not work. Even Paint Shop Pro doesnt like money.

I really dont like this.

Next theyll be bringing out Video recorders that wont record your favourite tv show! well its illegal to do so anyway.

Is this the beginning?

#35

where would that leave tivo?!!

IIRC, this is some sort of new technology where the interference patterns on modern banknotes have encoded messages to any compatible device regarding legal status (something to do with the spacing of the lines).

Honestly speaking though, unless someone comes up with a cheap printer/scanner combination that can reproduce holograms (as on the latest UK notes) this is a waste of time and nothing more than a PITA for the consumer.

I was planning on buying the upgrade for the new version. I’ve been using 7.

I never had the need to scan money but with the added copy protection and this I think I’ll wait. I don’t care what anybody tells me I know this has to slow something down by checking all your images. Like someone else said I could picture them adding logos to the system.

By the way this only happens in CS not in 7 or earlier.

Weird stuff…

I took a pic of a USD 20 note with my digital camera, and Photoshop 8 didn’t react to that file. Not as good quality as you get with a scanner, but it’s a workaround if you don’t have an older version of Photoshop around, and need to use a note as a texture map etc.

#39

I don’t think anybody posted this link yet. It explains the U.S. laws regarding using money for illustrations etc.

has anyone taken the guys advise on the first page and tried to scan the bill with a patterened background? I am sure that if more than just the bill was being scanned at one shot PS would not recognize it.
