[photoreal character] Lensha - training DVDs girl & animation WIP

#1

Ok guys, I’ve recently released my training DVD series on character modeling, advanced UV mapping and photorealistic texture painting but I decided I’d like to push this character a bit further than I did on the DVDs. So, I decided I’d rig, skin and also animate it. So far, I’ve finished the rigging and skinning part. The animation is the last step since I want to model her some clothes and hair etc…

And I decided I’d like to show you my progress…

Here it is chronologically (since modeling, uvs and texturing is done):

The modeling part looked like this:

#2

Then, I had to UV map it properly for seamless and distortion free texturing:

#3

Ok, then, there were the textures.

I was aiming for photorealistic textures that actually fit the character, so do not expect any polished, covered in mascara, girl. This one is natural (btw: the way I personally like it most  )

#4

Ok, now, here comes the FUN part

I’ve decided to rig, skin and animate the character. As I already mentioned, she’s missing hair and some clothes, which will be added as I go…

The early skinning animation test:

And here are a few early stills from animation tests:

The rigging/skinning continues with a few more tests:

Second skinning animation test:

Some screenshots of the actual setup:

For those who are interested, here’s a demo of the rig in action:

Some fun

C&C WELCOME![/B]

cheers,

hehe, cool stuff loocas, she reminds me of a teacher in some way, you know those really evil ones :stuck_out_tongue:
like your work a lot, hope u have time to add some hair, personally i would try a mixture of grey and brown, her anatomy makes me feel like this…
unfortunately i still have to stick to modem, so i don´t torture myself by downloading your animation tests, but looking very compromising…

well, then cya

  • :D:D:D if only she herd that!

like your work a lot, hope u have time to add some hair, personally i would try a mixture of grey and brown, her anatomy makes me feel like this…

  • Thanks  and yes, she’s the darker type of a girl, so I’ll go for darker hair.

unfortunately i still have to stick to modem, so i don´t torture myself by downloading your animation tests, but looking very compromising…

  • That’s a pitty man :frowning: if you find some time, I’d like you to see the test animations, at least the latest skin test

cheers,

Wazzup guys/gals? No comments? Crits? Anything? :argh: :banghead:

#10

it´s me again, downloaded your latest skin test
very very good, maybe one little thing that bothers me is that linear transition at her eyebrows, looks too predictable imo, some variation would surely enhance the output…

see you later :stuck_out_tongue:

#11

Cool stuff! But is there anything about rigging the head ? ( i could not find anthing about rigging except “topology ready for being rigged and animated.”)

#12

If you mean a tutorial, no, I haven’t done any on riggin yet. This is simply a project that I wanna continue with from where the DVDs ended.

Nevertheless I’m actually planning on putting up a rigging videotutorial. It’s all coming soon man

  • Thanks for the crits  Yeah, at the moment I only have about 5 different morphs wich is not much at all  I’m going to make more morphs later for much more natural facial expressions…

#13

Just testing some hair-styles, colors, simply trying to get an idea how it is all going to work together on a simple model with simple lighting etc…

A crazy hair-do:

#14

its a shame you are so far allready, because the model lacks serious realism because one big issue and that the eye lids. they dont have enough volume, now its like a clean cut in the face, they also miss the seperation on the sides. maybe you could still tweak a little. be sure to save your weighting to external file, because it will probably mess up, and reload it when done tweaking.

also check your skin with mr or brazil using 1 direct light, spot or omni, lets say at 0,4 and a skylight.

keep up the good work

#15

Another hair test.

This time I tried to get a more realistic hair color. Still not 100% satisfied with the colr and highlights etc… but I think I’m on the right tracks here  The hair-cut will be totally different ofcourse, this serves for testing/preview purposes only…

#16

hey man… cool work, but i do agree witha previous comment about eyelids lacks volume… Hairs looking good for tests…

#17
  • Thanks for your crits man, much appretiated  however I’m not 100% sure what you mean? I can sorta “inflate” the eyelids quite easily without any re-skinning, but unfortunately since I’ve already UV mapped the head and skinned it, I won’t be doing any major changes to the topology :frowning:

also check your skin with mr or brazil using 1 direct light, spot or omni, lets say at 0,4 and a skylight.

  • No need to  I’m using fR, but mostly, this material is TEMPORARY anyway, I’ll be doing a full SSS shader later on, I’m using this one because it renders so damn quick and gives me a nice preview of how the shader with proper SSS will look like. As for skylights/arealights, same reason, I wanna render quick at this stage, so no such things at the moment… Later…

keep up the good work

  • Thanks a lot man
  • Heeeeey Neeno, my man  How are you? And how are the folks? Thanks for the comments man, much appretiated. Have you seen the anim. tests yet? Cheers mate…

Btw: one last hair test:

Good night for today…

#18

yea, i understand that you cant easaly edit(ad) geometry because of the uv’s. wouldnt do that either.

but what i meant with the eyelids is, that the have no edge,. before the eyelid end into the eye, it tends to be thicker there, and is hangs a little outward. also the upper eyelid overlaps the lower and goes on a little and makes a wrinkel.

chech some images of eyelids, you could fix this a little by editing what you have, making the upper eyelids thicker, and overlapping the lower and making a crease on the side of the eye.

#19

hair is looking good, looks a little bit too blurry at this stage but i think with proper lighting (casting shadows etc.) it will be much better…

#20

Thanks man, I’ll try to tweak the eyes a little bit more

Thanks mate  yes, so far these were just simple tests to see what could be done with it. I haven’t used this particular (Shave&Haircut) hair/fur system for any commercial/personal project yet, so I’m kinda learning it as I go as well  It’s pretty easy to understand and get the settings under your skin, however, as always, controlling the hair is just a pain!
