pencilling realistically in photoshop

#1

hi guys,

i just got my wacom tablet last week and im having a tough time trying to pencil in photoshop. I was wondering if you guys knew of a brush or the brush settings that emulate a graphite pencil really well.

so far i’ve come up with the grainy side of a graphite pencil, but i just cant get it to work like the point.

thanks for reading this.

Heyu, have you tried fiddling with the dual brush settngs to get texture? Ehh sorry I dun really know PSCS, if that’s your version of Photoshop…Good luck with it :hmm:

Well, I use Photoshop Elements 2.0 since it came with my Wacom Graphire. Not sure if you’re looking for a solid line like you’d get with a hard, round brush or a grainy line like you can get from the chalk or pastel brush but either should work well. BTW I’ve heard some people put a sheet of sketch paper over the surface of their tablet so the Wacom stylus drags more like a pencil on paper.

Which version are you using? If you have the brush features of P7 or CS you can try a semi-hard brush, around 70%, enable smoothing and set your brush to multiply. I think this will mimic the 2B pencil found in Painter, which I use quite a lot. Setting the brush to multiply should build up darker color with every stroke. But you will have to play with your opacity and flow settings.

Good luck!

thx a bunch. i been playing around forever with settings, and the closest i got is with noise, scattering, and brush dynamics, opacity 70%, and wacom tablet set to softest.

it still doesnt feel right for some reason. i dunno maybe i should just not illustrate digitally in pencil

ive tried scouring the internet but couldnt find any graphite brush for photoshop 7. well, hope someone has an idea.

To be honest, Painter is much much better at simulating natural art tools than Photoshop. You might want to look into that as an alternative. I even designed a custom brush in Painter that looks identical to real life pencils.

That brings me to the absolutely useless inferior “pencil” tool in Photoshop, found as an option to the wonderful brush tool…1-bit pixel painting tool for the mainframe age, good morning

Zhuzhu got a wonderful pencil preset for photoshop. It looks wery pencil-like
Here is his watercolor tutorial. That’s where yo get it

Useless ?? I use it constantly to fix bad antialising.

agh sorry for double post.

thx for zhuzhu’s brushes ill check em out.

heres a sketch i did using my current settings, color: a dark grey almost black, opacity 60%, pixel size 4, brush dynamics, noise, and scattering.

the picture is of one of my characters from the game Guild Wars. I took a screenshot as a reference, because i’m not too good at foreshortening yet, and basically just drew freely once i got the pose down.

if i didnt tell you it was done digitally would you think it was done with graphite on real paper? if so, then i guess the brush does its job. It still doesnt feel right to me though at larger pixel sizes.
