Parenting problem

#1

I am trying to parent part of my segmented character to a null. Everytime I do, it places a yellow dot where it originally was, then jumps down the screen quite a bit. I checked the options in the parent block and it isn’t changing anything.

I did all the parenting of the layers in modo, if that makes a difference.

Sounds like you have an object which has its pivot off somewhere, and the parent isn’t parent-in-place. But, its hard to tell without more info, demo scene, etc.

#3

I specifically set the pivot for each segment. Is there no option for parent in place? I’ve tried unparenting all the objects in the leg then doing it again.

#4

Thre’s a script for parent-in-place. Look at zoogonp.com
(I think from Christopher - very cool.)

Can you post a scene?

#5

Got a more specific link for that plugin, can’t see it.

I’ll get a demo scene posted

#6

Here’s the demo scene. Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Basically, I’m wanting a set up like the one in the tutorials folder that comes with messiah, named CarlDavis_FootSetup.fxs.

in this scene I want

Guy_Lt_LowerLeg
>>Ankle
>>>Guy_Lt_Foot
>>>>Rot
>>>>>Guy_Lt_Toe
>>>>>>Toe

everytime I try to set up that heirarchy, it goes wrong. I’ve got the nulls positioned exactly how I want them.

Cheers,
Malcolm

Hmm, they used to be down in the script bar, so it took me a moment to find them…

Under setup / items
use the drop-down menu -> Parent items.

select desired parent item, desired child item, mark “keep position, alignment”
then parent.

Not quite as intuitive as I’d wish for - I’d prefer a “parent-in-place” mode, then the trusted drag-and-drop… but this works fine. Let me know if this is what you were looking for.

It still isn’t working. Each time I try to parent a null to an object, or vice versa, it changes position.

Could you try the demo scene I posted? I’d really appreciate it, it’s a simple setup.

Cheers,

Malcolm

It’s ok. I found a way.

For some reason, if I unchecked keep postition and alignment when parenting a null to an object, it worked but you need to check them both again if you want to parent an object to the next object in the tree. Slightly odd, but it worked.

Thanks for the help

Yeah - could use a bit of spit and polish, eh?
Glad to see you got past it - I had created the hierarchy as described but didn’t save the scene. Say if you need it.

You can assign keyboard shortcuts to “parent in place” and “un parent in place”
(customize / Key command manager)

I’ve set these to “P” and “U” repectively.

Then you can simply select your items in the list view, hit the appropiate key and away you go.

Not quite as nice as having a mode and simply using drag and drop, but not so clunky as to be an issue really (once you get used to the order of selection).

Thanks! Good tip.
