Ok So I’ve imported my model. Rigged it using Ab auto Rig and skin it with heatweight PM. When I switch to paintskin weights mode to fix some stuff. I locked all the joints first. Then slected one joint unlocked it and zeroed out some verts then bam they go straight down in some random direction. Not sure why this is happening they should have returned to there origin right?

I guess that as all the other joints are locked, the vtx cannot be linked to another joint. You must unlock another joint
Locking your weights can be helpful when trying to keep areas of influence
isolated, but like Pahuska said, the other joints need to be unlocked.(At least other ones around the verts you are working on)
This is because when you remove weights from one influence, maya just puts that weight to
it’s best guess of where you want it to go. If all weights are locked and you remove all influence from the one unlocked, these verts have less than 1 influence and move towards the origin.(0 influence is all the way at origin) You will notice this when importing skin weights, on the import all influence is set to 0 so the model disappears essentially until the tool assigns the influence to the verts, then they start snapping into place.

Wow thanks to both of your responses really helpful had no idea why it was doing that but now it makes sense. Thanks again
