Painting Materials techniques

Hi,

Im looking really get to grips with painting in photoshop and was wondering what your techniques were for painting fabric and material. What I mean by that is material usually has a fine detail of texture that deforms around creases and folds etc. I have followed a few tutorials online dealing with cloth but they all seem to be silky type materials that just show you how to paint creases. Im after the more textured type of material such as demin or like this example: Fabric

Would it be a case of zooming in very close and painting with a very small brush or creating some sort of texture brush and deforming it with a displacement map in Photoshop somehow. Just wondered what the Tips and Tricks are from the pros on here?

Another solution would be to simply use something like Zbrush and actually stamp the textile texture into the model, but this is assuming you want to add 3D to your workflow.
