Painting a character C&C

Sup guys…

 I'm working on this armored dude. I haven't used PS for painting ever so any advice would be cool. I don't have a tablet so that kinda limits me.

 I've just been using pen tool to block the colors out and then dodge and burn to create lighting. I figured I'll create the whole lighting first and then I'll start to grunge it out.
