I was looking for a good tutorial on how to paint directly on the model (for newbies). Does anyone know one?
paint tutorial
Have you checked the Luxology site? I’ve seen a few tutorials there. Also give Luxology.tv a look as well.
You should find something there to get you going.
Yes, I tried there, but there is none for complete newbies. They all assume you know the basics
The painting process on meshes is pretty straight forward in Modo. The user reference is all you need to get started technically. But I guess you are more interested in the artistic process of texture painting, right? You should look for resources about (texture) painting in general in this case and not limit yourself to Modo tutorials. A great book I can recommend is ‘Digital Texturing & Painting’ by Owen Demers.
Here is a small mini tutorial:-
Step 1.
From the modo tools form, click on the sphere tool and then the apply button to use default settings. The primitive tools in modo have a uv map already create, so we can skip that process, otherwise you will have to uv map your model with modos many tools.
Step 2.
Click on the Sculpt/Paint tab and then click on the utilities tab that will appear afterwards.
Step 3.
Click the ‘Add Color Texture’ button. This will prompt you for a name and a save location. You will also be asked for the size of the texture you want to work with. The larger you go, the more memory and processing power is required for each stroke.
Step 4.
Click on the Paint Tools tab and you will see a list of tools you can use to paint with. Selecting the airbrush and soft edge brush option below it, then choose a colour.
Step 5.
Middle Mouse Button = Will sample the colour that is below the mouse and use it.
Right Mouse Button = Brush size
Left Mouse Button = Paint on your mesh
Hope this helps, and also check out the tutorials that are in your account on Luxology that come with modo.
Cheers.
