Out of memory issues - Rendering with Maxwell

#1

i’ve been having problems with “out of memory” issues with this rhino model for work when rendering with maxwell. the part of the model that is causing the problem (which i know because it has always worked fine prior to this) is this gate that i made (see screenshots) whose pattern is created by repeated extruded shapes. i have tried several possible solutions to no avail which include significantly reducing the file size to around 100MB, and trying to render this both in rhino 3 and rhino 4 (which i thought might work because of the increased memory). i have had this issue with rendering simple extruded pipe shapes as well.

my computer is an intel xeon quad core (E5345 @ 2.33 GHz) with 4 Gb RAM.

to be honest, i’ve seen much more complex forms being rendered, is it an issue with the modeller, the renderer, or are there solutions to this issue. hopefully i don’t have to resort to taking screenshots of this thing for my presentation.

thanks for all your help and suggestions!

I seem to recall having a similar problem at one time, i think it had to do with an object as a block/instancing or grouping objects maybe both…sorry for the vagueness.
-explode groups/ungroup…the blocks thing is more of a problem.
Try eliminating the other things from the scene one by one or start from 1 object to see if maxwell can parse/load the scene/object…this is probbly the simplest thing to do.
Since it is the gate that is not rendering try cutting it in half just to test.
On the maxwell /rhino forum some people find it is ram related per overclocking mem or failure.
If you are topping out the ram and the last cell on the ram are bad then you crash.
-memtest.

Thanks CloneOps,

I seem to have found a solution to this problem that is related to your suggestion. since it’s a pattern created by a repeated object, i decided to remake the gate by making a block out of one of the modules and repeating that (originally each entity was it’s own object, not a block). that reduced the file size by over 50%!, and now it works. I am not entirely sure whether it’s due to the reduced file size or because the pattern is now made with block instances, or a bit of both, but as I said, now it works. Very happy. Thanks again.
