Optimal Frame Rate

#1

Im curious what is the prefered frame rate here? Naturaly we’d like 200 fps if that were possible, but the problem is we like to see some bumpmapping etc instead of bare walled levels.

I had assumed… 30 fps was pretty acceptable. But it seems a lot of people try to keep things at 60 fps. I was a bit surprised there, as I know film itself runs at 24 fps. So to me, 30 would be adequate? Or perhaps, the 60 fps is used to take into consideration it is an average value, and thus prevents those moments when the rate drops drasticaly due to a resource hungry event?

60 frames per second is good because it is higher than the eye can generally update so movement is perceived as smooth. 30 is acceptible, but it depends on things like the speed of camera motion and animation. Racing games look a lot better if they can run at 60, whereas a platform game can generally get away with 30 without looking jerky.

There’d be no point in trying to get a game to run at 200 fps since you wouldn’t see the difference over one that ran at 100fps.

I read somewhere that the human eye updates at about 40 times per second for the centre focused part and higher at the periphery where you can’t see in detail. You can’t see the update of a TV screen when you look at it directly (60 fps in NTSC), but if you look at it out of the corner of your eye you can see the rollbar effect.

the 24fps of movies is only acceptible because there’s a lot of motion blur which hides the low frame rate. If there wasn’t any you’d really notice the low update.
